I recently received this as part of an Estée Lauder gift with purchase (trying out EL Double Wear Foundation!), and to be frank, I wasn’t especially keen on either of the two lipstick colors being offered. It was basically a light pink and a deep pink; as a very yellow-toned person, I’m very picky with pink lipsticks! Both pinks seemed cool-toned, so I ended up just picking the deeper one, since in my experience I can pull off a deeper cool-toned color much better than a lighter one.
So, when Pure Color Long Lasting Lipstick in Rubellite arrived, I took a glance at it and went, “Ehh.” It’s pretty, but looks quite cool-toned and not at all something I would choose for myself. (It also had that weird bubbly nonsense on its surface, as you can see from the photo above. I’m sure it’s harmless, but it looks kind of gross.)
Let me just add that in the past, I have not had good experiences with Estée Lauder lipsticks. Years ago, back when their Sugar Daddy lipstick was very popular, I got suckered into getting it since it actually looked like a color that would suit a warm-toned person. Along with Sugar Daddy, I received another GWP lipstick that I can’t remember the name of. Both looked pretty decent on at first, but after a while, they would both turn the same shade of orange-fuchsia on me. Ewww.
At least Rubellite won’t have that issue. I mean, it’s already really, really pink.
First off, the lipstick has a sort of candied fruit scent to it. I don’t mind scented lipsticks (MAC’s vanilla and Lancôme’s heady floral come to mind), but this one is pretty strong, and I’m not a fan of it.
As for the color, in the tube, it’s a medium-deep raspberry with very fine, cool-toned (blue/purple/silver) shimmer. Very pretty. On my lips, it goes on a tad brighter and lighter. Very fuchsia. The color generally stays true, though, and it’s vibrant! The shimmer isn’t super obvious. There’s just enough to make the lipstick look less flat. It’s not really a color I’d wear, but it surprisingly doesn’t look awful on my yellow-toned skin. I could probably work with this with the right makeup on.
The texture is very slippery—I got lipstick on my teeth immediately! This is not a long-lasting lipstick. It looks and feels nice and moist, though I can definitely feel that I am wearing it, as it has a bit of greasiness/heaviness to it.
Overall, I’m not a fan and I would definitely never purchase a Pure Color Long Lasting Lipstick if they are all like Rubellite. The price is much too high for a lipstick that performs only slightly better than your average drugstore lipstick.
Estée Lauder Long Lasting Lipstick retails for US$26 / CA$32. The product I reviewed is a gift with purchase in GWP packaging. Mine was made in Canada.
