I bought this NYX Matte Lipstick a couple of years ago at Cherry Culture (not affiliated, and can I just say I am so disappointed that they only seem to carry NYX and their own line, now? I loved getting China Glaze, Milani and Jordana from them!).
Anyway, not only was it my first NYX lip product, but it was also my first foray into matte lip products. My lips tend to be dry, so I’d never really wanted to exacerbate the issue by wearing what I figured would be drying lipstick. Well, once I tried NYX’s Matte Lipstick, I started to really love having matte lips! I’ve since gone on to buy a few more matte formulas from other brands, but this is the one that started it all for me.
I picked Sierra (MLS 12), a midtone tawny orange cream with a matte finish. (Do they even do non-cream mattes? Shimmer mattes?) This is quite a warm terracotta shade, so I would probably not recommend this to you if you’re cool-toned, but I do love it on my warm-toned skin.
The formula is really nice: you can apply one sheer layer for a lighter look, or build it up to a richer brick. It’s smooth, not drying on my lips, and it lasts a really long time. (OK, possibly TMI, but this was actually the lipstick I had on the day I went into labor. Pics of me after the fact show that this lipstick made it through with flying colors! I mean, it didn’t look perfect, obviously, but it wasn’t faded or clumping all over my lip lines. I think that’s pretty insane, especially since I am sure I used lip balm over it a couple of times, too.)
So, this lipstick is always going to have a special place in my heart, but even without the nostalgia factor, I think this is such a nice lipstick and I need to buy more! Actually, I kind of can’t believe I haven’t already. Probably because I went on a matte spree after trying this and got some MAC and YSL mattes, but I should go back to NYX. They did great with this one.
The packaging is like that of their newer Butter Lipstick, except it’s all in black. Again, sort of cheap looking, but sturdy. The lipstick didn’t have a discernable taste or smell, despite the presence of fragrance in the ingredient list.
If you’ve tried these Matte Lipsticks and like them, I’d love to know what shades you’d recommend! I also feel that I really need to try their well-reviewed Matte Lip Creams.
NYX Matte Lipstick retails for US$6.00 and is 0.15 oz / 4.2 g. It is made in Taiwan.
NYX Cosmetics (named after the Greek goddess and pronounced “Nix”, though in my head I always say “N-Y-X”!) is based in Los Angeles, CA, USA. It has been owned by The L’Oréal Group since 2014. NYX also states that they are cruelty-free, but I’m not sure how that jives with being part of L’Oréal.
