Yves Saint Laurent — Rouge Rock (Rouge Pur Couture The Mats) Swatch & Review

Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture The Mats in Rouge Rock

Last year, my husband went to the department store to pick up a little gift for me, and he somehow ended up at the Yves Saint Laurent Beauté counter, where the SA directed him to their new matte lipsticks. As he really loves red on me, red is what he chose, so here is Rouge Rock, my first ever matte lipstick (what can I say, I was strictly a creamy/shimmery girl before).

YSL do name their lipsticks, but they don’t seem to put the name on the lipstick label. It just says “203” on the bottom of the tube. Seems a bit odd, as there is more than enough room on it to fit the whole name in small print.

The tube itself is gold and metallic, and very rectangular. I am not a fan; I find it a bit tacky looking. The smooth, shiny surface collects fingerprints very easily, and it has already tarnished in some spots even though I have only left it in my bathroom drawer.

The lipstick itself, however, I love. This is the most weightless formula I’ve ever tried. It barely feels like anything is on my lips. The pigmentation is stunning, and one light swipe is enough for full opacity. The staying power is very good, 6–8 hours for me.

YSL’s description of the Mats formula is:

The must have for the perfect matte lip look. Rich, creamy formula is infused with a velvet complex for a luxuriously smooth application, and jojoba oil for long lasting comfort. Intense color pigments for a vibrant touch of color that lasts.

Formulated with “Velvet Complex”, a combination of spherical powders and silk oil, Rouge Pur Couture The Mats gives the lips a perfect matte finish, a sensual sheen and 6-hour color hold that never fades or smudges.

Rouge Rock is a true-to-slightly-cool vibrant red with a matte finish. The color is strikingly clear with no muted or muddy tones. It is not the easiest red to wear, due to its vibrancy. I do tend to feel like I need to be in a LBD and heels while wearing it! As a formula, though, this is a real winner.

  1. The only thing I gleaned from your post is that my SO doesn’t buy me makeup!!! I’m forwarding this post to him. 😛

(This lipstick looks really nice! Not my taste – matte AND red, no can do for me – but I’m glad your hubby knows you well enough to pick up what you’d like. Mine would likely buy me a shimmery orange lipgloss… bless)

    • Hee hee! I think it’s more that he loves red on me, rather than that I love red (though I do! so we just lucked out). Also, he would rather throw money away than buy me a “nude” or a pink lipstick. And I quote: “But WHY?” and “It’s very pink.”

      • SO funny, because it’s completely the opposite with my SO – he detests even a hint of colour on my lips. If I rock a red lip, he thinks I look SOOOO made up, even if I have nothing else on my face – it’s ALL about the lips. He doesn’t really notice at all if I’ve hooker smokey eyes, but the lips, omg NO! Not red! 😛

        • That is hilarious! People can be so very different. He must think you look great au naturel! Winner! 😀

BTW I’ll take any unwanted shimmery orange lip glosses off your hands. Hehehe…
