Throwback Thursday! Essie — Marabou & Virgin Orchid (Nail Polish)

Collection: Marabou, Essie 2001 Summer, Summer Wear

Collection: Virgin Orchid, Essie 2002 spring, Flower Power

For Throwback Thursday this week, I have another pair of soft, French manicure-type Essies. Both are discontinued.

Marabou is a light whitened pink cream. This one was a massive pain to apply; the swatch shows four coats.

I swatched and reviewed it long ago; here’s what I wrote then:

Marabou, a pale, mod-ish, opaque pink creme, is exactly the sort of thing that looks hideous on me. Nice if these colours suit you, though. It looks just like a strawberry milkshake, and it took a bit of self-control for me to avoid licking the polish. I did three coats, and would have gotten away with it, too, if it wasn’t for those pesky streaks.

Virgin Orchid is a sheer mauve pink shimmer. It has hints of lilac and a touch of gold shimmer. Despite this one being sheer and a tad frosty, I do love it! The swatch shows two coats.

Essie Nail Polish retails for US$8.50 / CA$9.99–$10.99 and is 0.46 US fl oz / 13.5 mL. The polish is free of toluene, formaldehyde, and dibutyl phthalate (DBP). (However, the older polishes in this Throwback Thursday post may not have been 3-Free, and the MSRP would probably have been different.) It is made in the USA.

Essie Cosmetics, founded in 1981, is based in Westfield NJ, USA. In 2010, Essie was acquired by the L’Oréal Group.

  1. Oh but Marabou is SO worth the effort, right! It looks gorgeous. I politely disagree – I think the shade looks very pretty on you! I have a few in my collection that look like this (Essie Spaghetti Strap comes to mind) and yes, PITA to apply like a white creme but they do look so clean and neat.

Virgin Orchid – oh I LOVE this one! It’s like a tamer cousin of Nude Beach. Can you think of a dupe for this?

    • Haha, well thanks! It does look super pretty on its own, I think. Like strawberry yogurt. Light pink is just not really my thing, I guess.

I can’t think of a Virgin Orchid dupe! 😦 Yes, it is a bit like Nude Beach, also a gorgeous one!
