Luckily, it turned out to be a pretty decent box, and leaves me looking forward to future boxes. One great thing about the Canada-based Topbox is that it only costs CA$12, so after Ontario tax, it comes to CA$13.56. Since the Canadian dollar has been falling against the US dollar, Ipsy and Birchbox now cost now costs Canadians over CA$19! [2015-08-05: I was corrected by Natalie in the comments! Birchbox Canada charges in CAD, not USD, so it ends up costing CAD$14.95 per month. Thank you so much, Natalie!] Granted, you get 4 deluxe samples with Topbox instead of 5 with Birchbox and Ipsy.
What I Received
- BareMinerals Lash Domination Volumizing Mascara (1.5 mL sample) [MSRP CA$23 for 10 mL]
- Missha M Perfect Cover BB Cream SPF 42 (three 10 mL sample tubes in 3 shades) [MSRP CA$23.99 for 50 mL]
- OFRA Universal Eyebrow Pencil (1.13 g, full-sized) [MSRP US$13 for 1.13 g]
- Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat (14 mL, full-sized) [MSRP CA$9.95]
- Topbox patterned cylindrical cardboard container
- Missha coupon for a GWP if I spend $14.99 on Missha at Topbox.ca
Everything came in a pretty white and purple patterned cardboard cylinder, just like last month. I guess it’s the standard packaging.
I’ve actually already got one of these samples from Sephora, and I can only use waterproof mascara, so this is a bit of a dud. (I did recently buy a waterproof eyelash primer, though, in the hopes of being able to use these water-based mascara samples!)
I actually use Missha’s M Signature Real Complete BB Cream SPF 25 already (in shade 23), and I recently bought their M Perfect Cover BB Cream SPF 42 (in shade 21), but I haven’t tried it yet. So, the Missha samples I received here are a bit redundant for me, but I am happy that they sent the M Perfect Cover in three shades! Now I’ll get to try two other shades. I suspect 23 is really my shade, even though it’s a tad dark in the winter. However, I have gotten quite a bit tanner this summer, so maybe 27 will work well now.
I generally prefer grey eyebrow powder since I have black hair and I find that brown eyebrow products look off. I’ll give this a try, though, and if I don’t like it as a brow pencil, maybe I can use it as an eyeliner.
Seche Vite isn’t my all-time favorite top coat (that’d be CND Speedey), but it’s far from my least favorite, so it’s nice to have an extra, full-sized bottle of top coat around! I can usually get this for around CA$7–8 at Winners, but it normally retails for more like CA$10 here.
Finally, the coupons are a little annoying. I’m probably not going to use this one, and I never ended up using the coupon for a free Deborah Lippmann nail buffer that they sent last time, since I’m not usually near one of the stores you had to go to. I’d much rather just receive one extra, small sample than some coupon.
Overall, while I got a couple of items that I already have, I really like the idea of the products I received. If I didn’t already have the BareMinerals mascara, Missha foundation, and Seche Vite top coat, I’d be jazzed about receiving them (well, maybe less jazzed about the non-waterproof mascara). Two full-sized items in the Orfa brow pencil and Seche Vite top coat are also nice bonuses, and even the Missha samples are good-sized tubes and not those infinitely irritating foil packets that hold pea-sized amounts. AND, no hotel samples of body wash, lotion and shampoo! Huzzah!
I am definitely looking forward to receiving more Topboxes!
For those of you in Canada, have you tried Topbox?
