Collection: butter LONDON Spring 2013, Sweetie Shop
The first polish I’m reviewing from my recent haul is Kerfuffle. (If you’re wondering, a kerfuffle is a colloquial British term for a commotion. Butter LONDON’s polishes are all Brit-inspired, and I’m a little embarrassed to admit that I watch enough British television to get most of the names! In kerfuffle’s case, I immediately think of this Little Britain sketch.)
Kerfuffle the polish is a pastel peachy-pink cream. It isn’t a neon, but it borders on it, if that makes any sense. There’s a whitened brightness to it that causes it to photograph a bit paler than it actually is (which neons have a tendency to do).
The color itself is pretty fantastic—it’s the kind of coral-pink that I’d wear all summer. It’s a bit chameleonic: depending on the light it can look quite pink or quite peach. My swatch came out looking pink, but it can definitely look somewhat peachier than that.
The formula, however, leaves a lot to be desired.
I’m a little more forgiving of difficult pastels, just because they are usually tricky to apply—though I’ve recently been surprised by Sally Hansen Hard as Nails Xtreme Wear and Yves Rocher Botanical Colour Nail Polish (pastel reviews yet to be posted, but they are super nice). Three coats seems to be the minimum just to get them to even out properly.
Kerfuffle is no exception. I generally like to use thin coats, so three coats was not quite enough for me to be satisfied with Kerfuffle. I did four coats for the swatch. Three was OK, but I just felt like it needed more evening out, as some areas were a tad baldy. I think if I’d done thicker coats, three would have been fine.
Overall, I’m pretty disappointed in this polish. While the color is really lovely, the formula is a bit too much trouble. It does dry quite quickly to a nice, glossy finish, though, so perhaps having to add extra coats is not as big a deal as it is with some other polishes.
Note that the front of the bottle seems to have orangey streaks. This is because the bottle was probably sitting on its face for months before I received it, so the yellow/orange pigmentation collected there a bit. Shaking it up didn’t really do the trick, so just be aware that the polish normally isn’t streaky-looking like that.
butter LONDON 3 Free Nail Lacquer is US$15 / CA$18 and is 0.4 US fl oz / 11 mL. The lacquer does not contain toluene, formaldehyde, or dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and is made in the USA.
butter LONDON is based in Seattle, WA, USA.
You know what, I’ve never actually SEEN the word “kerfuffle” written down. I’ve spoken it many times, or heard it as a child. But never seen it spelled out. Weird.
I don’t think I own any BL creams so I’ve never noticed the crappy formula… hmm. Does the bottle come with metal balls inside? I’ve noticed that a lot of polishes seem to not have those anymore. It irks me. I am actually planning on buying a bunch of ball bearings to drop them into all the polishes without them… but I have to investigate which metals are kosher to use in polishes – don’t want them to corrode away.

I’ve tried some of their other creams, even pastel, and they’re nice. I think this one is just a dud! Such a shame.
It does have a couple of metal balls. And yeah, I’d do a little research. Don’t want them dissolving into your polish! :O

Yeah, I’m looking at nail polish supply places instead of just randomly buying metal balls. Hey, have you ever been hit with a metal ball? Since they’re so attracted to you. 😆

It pulls more pink on your hand and more peach in the bottle. Amazing! You can already see what you’re talking about it having different shades in different lights.

Ahh, thank you so much for reviewing this!! ❤ I’ve been dying to get my hands on this shade, but the patchiness is turning me off… thanks for the warning! =)
Also, I love Lou & Andy. Best part of Little Britain.

Whoops, didn’t see past your first line. :O Yeah you can definitely do better, formula-wise. My fave Little Britain sketch was the Scottish innkeeper (ep 1), but they never did another one, AFAIK! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rax50efCUk
