Brand: Avon
Thanks to my son, there are two Throwback Thursday swatches today!
So, I just posted about how my 1½ yr old little boy got into a box of my nail polish, and I thought all was well.
But, I’d stupidly left the box on the dining table (pushed far in, but clearly that wasn’t enough). With my back turned for 30 seconds, my peanut had grabbed the box, and I yelled “Nooo!” just as it teetered over the edge of the table. Boom, smash, and I can’t believe what a little long-armed monkey he is. I swear, he’s gonna be taller than I am in about five years.
Luckily, the peanut’s just dandy. Once he got over my initial grumbling and scolding, he delighted in my crouching under the table and wiping up spilled polish and small bits of broken glass. He also took off with the paper towels.
Only one bottle of polish broke: NYC Broadway Burgundy, which is no great loss as it was about $1.49 and while it was nice, it’s not irreplaceable.
Another polish, an old Avon Nailwear, apparently already had a broken cap, so when it fell over, it leaked everywhere. So after cleaning everything up, I swatched it for the last time. Then I emptied out the bottle in the trash, over the paper towels I’d used to wipe the spilled polish off the floor.
And, of course, the rule is that all broken and spilled nail polishes must be deep, shimmery reds!
Wine Velvet is a pretty standard, shimmery midtoned red. I think it reads fairly neutral, because it has both cool burgundy and warm gold undertones. I don’t think Avon sells this one anymore, but it’s not terribly unique, so no great loss.
The formula is actually still good, and for a ~$5 polish, it performs nicely. Two coats is fully opaque.
I was never a fan of the cap, since it is awkward to hold, but the newer Nailwear bottles are much nicer.
I’m afraid I don’t know what year this polish was released, but it is from an older Nailwear line, perhaps a second incarnation as I remember an even older Nailwear bottle that was square. Reviews for Nailwear at Makeup Alley start from 2001, but I don’t know which version that was. At some point Nailwear got upgraded to Nailwear Pro, and then in 2012 it was reformulated and renamed to Nailwear Pro+. So at the very latest, this polish is from a year or two before 2012, and probably even earlier than that.
R.I.P., Wine Velvet! You’ve gone to the big HELMER in the sky.
Hmmm, here’s the label. It says “© 2004 Avon”! I suppose this either means this polish is from 2004, or perhaps this version of Nailwear was launched in 2004. Can’t say for sure, I guess.
Avon Nailwear Nail Enamel has gone through several revamps over the years; the current iteration is Nailwear Pro+ Nail Enamel. The old and new versions both contain 0.4 fl oz / 12 mL. It currently retails for US$6 / CA$8, though I believe it was a bit cheaper when I bought mine many years ago.
Avon Products, Inc. was founded in Manhattan, New York City, USA in 1886 when David H. McConnell, a door-to-door salesman, decided to start a perfume business. Avon remains a direct sales business to this day, and is still based in NYC.
Peanut’s got monkey arms! 😛 Is your hubby tall?

I have a few Avons in these bottles, at first I thought I have this shade but mine is actually called Crushed Velvet – looks similar to Wine Velvet. It was actually purged in Sept:
(the Avon bottle on the left side is Crushed Velvet, the other Avon is Retro Rose)
I bought a bunch from that time frame. Mine were purchased between 2010-2011 (as noted in my inventory spreadsheet!). RIP Wine Velvet!

Nope, hubby’s avg height. But he has monkey arms, too! Missed his true calling as an Olympic swimmer LOL! (http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/what-makes-michael-phelps-so-good/)
Partly it’s that peanut has really big feet for his size. They allow him to tiptoe much higher than you’d expect.
You’re gonna laugh but I think I have both Crushed Velvet and Retro Rose, as well. 😀 I wish Avon would sell online again (I really can’t be bothered with the direct sales, sorry to any Avon reps!).

LOL of COURSE you have those colours! I’m not surprised at all. I mainly got rid of them because I have lots of colours like Retro Rose, in formulas I prefer more, and I found Crushed Velvet a bit sheer / streaky. Yeah I’m with you about online sales for Avon. I used to order through a coworker who brought in the catalogues from a neighbour of hers so it was a hassle.
I’m actually imagining Peanut as a hobbit now… with them big feet. LOL.

Hahaha! Well, at least his feet aren’t furry.

Monkey arms! Hahahah. So cute! Glad the little one got out just fine while he could!
It’s like spilling wine, only red wine gets spilled on nice carpets! 😛

Had a red wine spill on a beige carpet once…and no lie, I poured white wine over it within a couple of minutes. The red stain literally disappeared. I didn’t even have to blot or anything. I don’t know why it’s said that this doesn’t work well (maybe it was the types of red and white in my situation?) but it was like magic! LOL
Somehow, I don’t think pouring top coat or white polish over spilled red polish is gonna help. 😀

Oh gosh: I just have this imagine of you running towards the table in slowmotion as it falls! Lucky there weren’t more broken bottles though, cleaning it up is always such a mess.

Yes, I’m so glad there were no injuries and no additional broken items. I did get nail polish on my pants, but at least they’re just lounge pants 😀

Could have been a lot worse..nail polish on your favorite jeans would be a nightmare.

Haha, oh that would have been bad!

Oh no! I’m glad it wasn’t a total loss though, RIP Wine Velvet!

Very pretty shade and it looks more like a glossy scarlett red rather than to a wine colour.
