The 2016 Oscars aired last night, but I didn’t watch much of it (I caught a bit of Emmanuel Lubezki, The Revenant, winning his 3rd Cinematography Oscar in a row, and Jenny Beavan, Mad Max: Fury Road, winning what must be yet another Costume Design Oscar) and chose to finish off Season 2 of Breaking Bad, instead—yes, I’m quite behind on my TV watching!
That said, I’m also incredibly behind on my movie-watching: having a toddler means I’ve basically seen two whole movies in the cinema all last year (The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and Spectre), and the only other Oscar-nominated films I’ve seen were Mad Max: Fury Road and Inside Out, and I fell asleep half an hour into the latter. I do have Ex Machina in my Netflix queue, I guess. Is Alicia Vikander in every movie I want to see?
This morning, however, I spent a little time checking out the Oscar dresses—because that’s obviously the best part for us muckety-mucks—and was not disappointed!
Here’s a selection of colorful dresses and matching nail polishes I found—sorry, I didn’t include some lovely black (Jennifer Lawrence in Dior, Julianne Moore in Chanel), white (Rooney Mara in Givenchy, Priyanka Chopra in Zuhair Murad, Lady Gaga in Brandon Maxwell) and primary red (Charlize Theron in Dior, Jared Leto in Gucci) ensembles, simply because those polish colors are a dime-a-dozen.
My favorite looks from the night were worn by Cate Blanchett, Naomi Watts, Saoirse Ronan, and Margot Robbie.

[Edit: 2016-03-01] I’m also going to sneak Tina Fey in here, since Stash Matters pointed her beautiful gown out to me in the comments! Stunning.

Love this post! 😀

I agree, Cate Blanchett, Naomi Watts, and Saoirse Ronan all made my best dressed list. Margot Robbie’s looks a little too… 80’s matronly for my taste.
Daisy Ridley’s dress would be great if it was just LONGER – what an odd length.
Oh man, now you make me want Marc Jacobs Sally again… it was just simmering on the wish list.
I really disliked Charlize Theron’s red dress. Also Olivia Wilde’s – those low plunging necklines down to the belly button just don’t do it for me. Also didn’t like Jennifer Lawrence’s dress – the balance is off.
Oh right, you asked for my favourtes… haha so much easier to choose the worst ones! 😛
Tina Fey looks AMAZING! Love the colour of her dress too:
What nail polish would you match to that? 😉

Whoa! For some reason, I didn’t come across any photos of Tina Fey. She’d definitely have made my list! That’s stunning, and a fantastic color for her. I’ll go with Chanel Lavanda or China Glaze Grape Pop:

I kind of agree with you on the necklines on Charlize & Olivia’s dresses! I guess to me they sort of get away with it b/c they’re just friggin’ gorgeous (and the back of Olivia’s dress was pretty cool). Jennifer Lawrence has been pretty boring to me; the only Oscar dress I thought she looked fabulous in was the slinky red number she wore for her first nomination, and even then it didn’t quite look “Oscars-y” enough:

Oh well, I guess there can only be one Cate Blanchett.

Some media outlets are comparing Tina Fey’s dress with Reese Witherspoon’s since they’re the same shade:

But the general consensus is that Tina wore it better – the back of Reese’s dress is a hot mess:
Great pick with the Chanel polish! 😀
Yes, the saving grace with the plunging necklines is that the wearers are STUNNING. Can’t fault them for trying something different.
Oh yes, I remember that Ck dress JLaw rocked on her major outing. She did look fab even though it wasn’t anything fancy.

Ha, I don’t even remember Reese’s dress. Tina wins, hands down. Reese’s dress looks a bit sloppy by comparsison.

I’ve added Tina Fey to the original post, too – thanks 🙂

Cool post! Naomi Watts dress was amazing! Probably one of my favourite Oscar dresses of all time – it was so unique but not at all weird, which is a fine balancez

That is very true, it is such a hard balance to get! I think Lady Gaga’s outfit works well re: weird/unique, as well. OTOH I do miss seeing outfits like Björk’s swan dress XD

Great try Chris and those nail shades rocks incredibly as good as the costume.

I just wish I could get a better look at all the red carpet manis! Hahaha! But it’s probably mostly boring French manicures 😉

Great post, so much fun to read. i never watch the oscars, just the red carpet. I do think the fashion has been a little safe in recent years, but some amazing dresses. Love your polish combo’s!

You’re very right, it has been getting a bit boring lately! I guess a bad economy doesn’t help much—perhaps the stars don’t want to seem too show-offy. I long for the days of Cher, Björk, and Cameron Diaz’s pajama dress. 😀

Oh that Bjork dress is the stuff of legend. They don’t have to go that far, but a little more out there would be nice.
