D’oh!
After getting this in my email yesterday, I just received this:
No big deal, since I already own half the shades in that collection!
I’m glad to be entered into the grand draw, but I hope it’s some kind of separate draw. It seems like it’d be kind of unfair to those who already made it into the grand draw.
Well, thanks anyway, Essie!
Oh well, hopefully you will win the jackpot!

This is too bad. It’s nice they entered you in another draw, but I really think that they shouldn’t have handled things this way. If they made a mistake and told too many people they’d won, they should own up to it, send everyone the promised prize, swallow the loss and learn from their mistake – aka get on with it.

I tend to agree…I think if I were in charge, I’d have either sent everyone the prize, anyway – or at least a voucher for a free Essie polish. No sense getting people annoyed, and it seemed like there were quite a few on Twitter! It was their own fault, after all. I suppose they must have really goofed and sent it to loads of people. I’m not too upset, just disappointed – but I’m actually more upset that they got a ton of people, including myself, to give out their names and addresses to receive a prize that they won’t get. (As someone who used to work in web development, however, I sympathize a little! Mistakes happen.)

Sure, mistakes happen. And I would have sympathised with Essie if they had kept their promise and sent everyone the prize they promised (or somehing of equal value in case they really didn’t have enough of the ltd edition polishes).
However, we tell small children to keep their promises and to own up to their mistakes, and we expect them to do that. And we would, of course, expect businesses to do the same. ๐
I think Essie chose the worst way out. Sad really. I hope that if anything like this ever happens again, they’ll handle the matter in a professional way.
Anyway, good luck for the other prize draw. Fingers crossed! xx

I tend to agree, but on the other hand I also feel like this was surely an honest mistake by some poor IT employee (d’oh!) and I’m pretty forgiving and won’t hold Essie’s feet to the flames for that. However, as you said, the stakes were pretty small for them, and rather higher for those of us who handed them our personal info. For PR’s sake, a large, high-profile company like Essie really should have done better to handle the situation! I admit I was surprised at their decision. I did receive a tweet from them that said something to the effect of staying tuned…guess they had too many complaints! ๐
