For my second Topbox (referral link) after resubscribing this summer, I didn’t “wish” for any of the special “Privé” boxes, because even though some of the brands were higher end/interesting (Bobbi Brown, Dr. Belmeur, Glamglow, Missha, Too Faced, etc.), I wasn’t enthralled by the actual products on offer, or their value. One option was actually a tarte eyeliner that costs $16 normally, so I’d be saving $4 by getting it? Gee, what a great deal. This isn’t what I find “fun” about a subscription box.
So, I stuck with the regular Topbox as I always have. (Will they actually have a Privé box that interests me, someday? I wonder.)
I also did not get a chance to pony up $10 for the additional “Beauty Surprise” since it sold out before I could sign up—but after checking out what other Topbox subscribers received, I’m a bit relieved that I saved my ten smackers.
I’m particularly relieved since I found my box this month to be something of a letdown. They are mostly items I can use, so at least they won’t go to waste, but there’s nothing I’m especially excited about at first glance. In hindsight, I should have opted for the Missha Privé, which was a tension compact valued at $24, which I would definitely have enjoyed using. Ah, well. Can’t win ’em all.
All prices are in CA$ unless otherwise noted.

Barefoot Venus Green Tea Body Wash in Lilly Pilly
50 mL [value: CA$6.90]
I’ve received Barefoot Venus before from Topbox/Luxe Box, and it’s a “natural” brand that’s made in Canada. Their packaging is very pretty, and while I’m not too excited about a small tube of body wash, I’m sure I’ll like it and use it up.
Be a Bombshell Lip Crayon in Some Beach
2.5 g full size [value: US$7]
At first look, this lip crayon comes in a really pretty bright coral shimmer that is right down my alley (even though summer is coming to an end). On the other hand, I prefer lipstick bullets to lipstick chubby pencils, and Be a Bombshell strikes me as a cheap beauty box brand that is still overpriced. It says it all that a 2013 MUA review of their lip crayon product mentions that the product retails for US$14; it’s US$7 on Be a Bombshell’s website now. I somehow doubt the formula or packaging has changed. Nevertheless, it’s a lippie and I love to try out new lippies!
BeneFit The POREfessional Pore Minimizing Makeup in 02 Light
5 mL sample [value: CA$13.33]
I’ve yet to find a BeneFit product I really enjoy, but at least this is the foundation and not the primer. I’m not sure how far 5 mL will go, but at least the shade (02 Light) seems close enough to my skintone. Not thrilled about this product, but I’m willing to give it a try.
Satin Smooth Day/Night Daily Moisturizer
10 mL sample [value: US$9.06]
Apparently this brand is a professional division of Conair Corp. I didn’t even realize Conair (not Con Air, heh) was into beauty products that were not hair-related. I’ve occasionally incorporated some Vitamin C into my skincare routine via The Ordinary, but it’s been stop-start due to other skincare issues I’ve had lately. I’m happy to give this a try when I get a chance.
I really wish Topbox’s system was more organized and customizable. There’s no way to rate products except by a survey they send every month, but they don’t ask about every single product. And, honestly, from the way their service is organized, it really does not seem like they’re keeping track of user responses over the long term. It feels more like they’re just collecting monthly ratings for the brands. I much prefer Ipsy’s system, which just feels like a well-oiled machine customized for the user, by comparison. But at only CA$12 a month, which includes shipping, I think Topbox is still worth a gamble. I didn’t win this month, but it wasn’t a total loss, either. Still, if you were to ask me if I’d rather have my $12+tax back this month, I’d say yeah. I definitely saw some other August Topbox items that I would have liked in my box:
- China Glaze Nail Lacquer in Rock ‘n Royale (full size)
- CND Vinylux Weekly Top Coat (full size—OK, I already have this, but still!)
- Shu Uemura Nutri:Nectar Cleansing Oil (15 mL)
