Well, it’s the end of an era. However, I can’t say we didn’t see this coming once Toronto-based Loblaw acquired Shoppers Drug Mart in 2013.
The Shoppers Optimum and PC Plus loyalty programs are now being merged into the PC Optimum program. The conversion will happen on February 1, 2018.
The points exchange does not appear to be consistent; when I use their points calculator, I get these wonky results:
|Shoppers Optimum Points||PC Optimum Points||Exchange Rate|
PC Plus points are converted to PC Optimum points at a 1:1 ratio (1 PC Plus point = 1 PC Optimum point).
Another change is that the new PC Optimum points may be redeemed in increments of 10,000 points. The Shoppers Optimum points had to be redeemed in amounts of 50,000 or 95,000. So, in the new system, you’ll be able to redeem faster (for presumably lower amounts than if you’d saved up more points, of course).
Every 10,000 PC Optimum Points will be worth $10. If you save up 500,000 PC Optimum Points, you will be able to redeem that for $500 off a single purchase. At this point, I don’t know if there will be tiers in between that will let you redeem for more than just $10 per 10,000 points.
At Shoppers Drug Mart, PC Optimum points will be accumulated 50% faster, with 15 PC Optimum points per dollar spent instead of 10 Shoppers Optimum points per dollar spent.
There will be a new PC Optimum app, which will presumably replace both the PC Plus and Shoppers Optimum apps.
One one hand, I’m annoyed that the system has changed, because I was the biggest fan of the Shoppers Optimum program, and I redeemed a lot at beautyBOUTIQUE! Also, now that points can be redeemed at Loblaws-owned grocery stores and at Shoppers Drug Mart, my “fun” money is gone! I used to be able to redeem points for beauty stuff at Shoppers and beautyBOUTIQUE. Now a lot of it will likely end up going to groceries. Maybe I need to open up a separate PC Optimum account just for fun, haha!
Loblaw claim that they will continue to run the Shoppers Drug Mart bonus points offers and events, like 20x the points events. We’ll see. I would think that Shoppers and their luxury cosmetic section, beautyBOUTIQUE, have been doing well and they shouldn’t want to jeopardize it by messing around with their successful points system. They don’t want me to go running back to Sephora, do they?
Hopefully, there will be a Shoppers points redemption event coming up soon; I’ve got a lot of points burning a hole in my Optimum Card.
