Mamonde — Blossoming High Cover Cushion Perfect Liquid Review

Over the next week or so, I will be reviewing several Korean beauty products sent to me by one of my favorite Korean beauty online shops, Tester Korea. I have reviewed my experience with them in the past; they have a different selection of brands from a few others that I use, and their prices are very competitive. My favorite thing about them is you can request brands and products and they’ll try to get them in stock!

Today’s review is for Mamonde Blossoming High Cover Cushion Perfect Liquid SPF34/PA++. I’ve been a fan of a couple of Mamonde’s skincare items, and I’m glad to be trying something from their makeup line for the first time.

Blossoming High Cover Cushion Perfect Liquid is a liquid foundation/BB cream that comes in a cushion compact, the form factor that started in South Korea and has become all the rage in the West over the last few years, as well.

Personally, I think cushion compacts are good for travel and touch-ups, but otherwise I never use them. I don’t think you get very much bang for your buck: for example, this one contains 0.45 oz / 13 g, compared with standard liquid foundation bottles which typically contain more than twice that amount, around 1 oz / 30 mL. Secondly, I hesitate to use the included sponge too much, since you keep touching it to your face, back to the cushion, and so on. Not hygienic! At home, when I use a liquid foundation, I use clean hands or a clean makeup sponge, and never double-dip-dirty. The only reason I ever use a cushion compact is to have it on the go, since they’re so easy to just slip into a handbag—I just need to remember to wash the applicator sponge, and its tray in the compact, when I get home. Well, that, and they do come in very cute compacts, sometimes!

From Mamonde:

  • Makeup is flawless thanks to finer cover powder made with Fine Pixel Cover™ technology and the reflecting effect of the Volume Up Light Powder™
  • Glow and shine with the Hydro Coating LiquidCover™! Puff made of soft material makes makeup stay to the skin to look smooth and flawless!
  • Liquid foundation in an airtight package to retain its color!
More convenient than foundation and more exquisite than cushion!
  • Hydro Coating Liquid™ developed from Preserved Flower Technology gives a glow and shine to the makeup, and the combination of film forming material and moisturizing ingredients form a barrier over the skin to give a shiny, hydrated-looking finish to the makeup.

Mamonde’s compact is a little chunky, but it seems made well. The plastic is firm and feels good, with a nice heft to it. The button to open the compact is large and operates smoothly. The puff applicator has a tapered tip (Mamonde call it a “Flower Petal-Shaped Puff”) and feels very nice and smooth. The mirror is a great size and looks good. You dispense the foundation by pressing down on the cushion.

Now, I’ve made an error in my color selection. Tester Korea asked which color I wanted, and since I’m often in between the two shades that Korean foundations usually come in (21 and 23—OMG just add 22 already, guys!), I went with 21 Ivory. (This product also comes in a lighter, presumably pinker shade, No. 17 Rose Ivory.)

Just look at their official swatches. Shouldn’t there be a shade 22 in between there?

D’oh! I’d definitely have been better off with 23 Beige in this foundation. See how chalky 21 looks on my after-summer hand? It would probably look good on my pasty underbelly, but on my slightly tanned face with (boo!) redness? No chance.

I did wear it—indoors—to test it, of course. This foundation has a very light, fruity sort of scent. I liked it but you can’t smell it once the foundation is applied. I used the included puff to apply. The foundation goes on very thinly, so I was quite surprised to note that it covered up all my redness very well. (My skin has been doing quite poorly lately; I suspect a reaction to something I’ve been using, but it may also just be that I’ve been getting very little sleep and drinking far too much coffee. Or maybe it’s just stupid hormones. Sigh.)

Once set, the foundation does get kind of powdery. This may be good on an oilier skin, but on my dry/combo skin, it looks a little funky. I did not set it with any powder, and I found that over the course of the morning, because it was a hot day, my skin started to get a bit oily and the foundation was starting to look rather worse for wear. And, because it’s way too light and peachy-pink for my skintone, it looked quite funny. (No, I do not have pictures for you!)

I’ve not had much time to experiment with this foundation before writing this review; should I play around with it a bit more, I’ll update this post.

Overall, my initial impression is: Great coverage and feels super lightweight! Finish is a bit dry-looking for a dry skin. Probably poor longevity on oily skin. Looks like this may be a balanced skin-only product. Nice—but only just that—packaging. And, if your skintone is any deeper (or yellower) than about a MAC NC25–30, you’re outta luck.

I would normally list ingredients, but I can’t find any online, and I can’t read Korean on the packaging. Here is a link to CosDNA’s ingredient list for “Mamonde high cover liquid cushion“, which I’m guessing is the same product but it is just that, a guess. I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the ingredient list, either.
