Movie & TV Roundup: December 2017, & Golden Globes 2018

For me, the best thing about the holidays is all time we get to spend with family! Often, we end up catching up on movies missed over the previous year, so I have a longer-than-usual list of movies watched this month.

We’ll probably slow down in January, though I am extremely psyched to see the TV-adaptation of The Alienist (which I’ve basically been waiting for since the early 1990s), which is out at the end of this month. Less anticipated but I’ll still watch: The X-Files (Season 11), which premiered on Wednesday.

What I Saw

  • Flight of the Conchords (Season 1) [2007]
  • Psych: The Movie [2017]
  • Coco [2017]
  • Mr. Robot (Season 3) [2017]
  • Power Rangers [2017]
  • The Foreigner [2017]
  • The Hitman’s Bodyguard [2017]
  • Dawn of the Planet of the Apes [2014]
  • Spider-Man: Homecoming [2017]
  • Valerian & the City of a Thousand Planets [2017] (unfinished)
  • It: Chapter One [2017] (rewatch; reviewed in November 2017)
  • Lord of War [2005] (rewatch)
  • John Wick: Chapter 2 [2017] (rewatch; reviewed in May/June 2017)

What I’m Still Watching

  • Brooklyn Nine-Nine (Season 5) [2017]
  • Flight of the Conchords (Season 2) [2009]

Movie & TV Roundup: November 2017

I apologize for being AWOL this week—a stomach bug hit our household again, and while Peanut and I have gotten off fairly scot-free, Mr. Fivezero and baby Olive were not so lucky. On the plus side, everyone’s on the mend, and having a fairly braindead week meant the husband and I were able to bingewatch the first season of The Blacklist.

Honestly, there is just so much on my current watchlist! Newer things like Alias Grace, Blue Planet II, The Punisher, and Valerian & the City of a Thousand Planets hang out with stuff from the last few years I never got around to seeing, like Hidden Figures, Sicario, and Intruders S1. And, of course, there’s always stuff I totally missed a while back that have come back onto my radar: About Time, Flight of the Conchords, and MacGruber.

There’s never enough time to see everything I want to! Here’s the piddly amount that I managed in November (with many thanks to my MIL for babysitting so we could get out and watch our most highly anticipated movies of the fall, It and Thor: Ragnarok):

What I Saw

  • Thor: Ragnarok [2017]
  • It: Chapter One [2017]
  • The Good Place (Season 1) [2016]
  • Free Fire [2016]
  • American Gods (Season 1) [2017]
  • The Blacklist (Season 1) [2013]

What I’m Still Watching

  • Brooklyn Nine-Nine (Season 5) [2017]
  • Mr. Robot (Season 3) [2017]

fivezero's Movies & TV Roundup (October 2017)

Movie & TV Roundup: October 2017

This month, I have a shorter list than usual, mostly because I’m in the middle of watching a bunch of shows, some of which I’m actually following week-to-week. Blargh! Who has the patience for that anymore? Just dump it all online! Do you know how painful it is waiting for each episode of Mr. Robot?!

I started watching last fall’s hit comedy, The Good Place, which has got me quite hooked. Here’s a cute beauty-related snippet from the third episode:

Jameela Jamil and Kristen Bell in The Good Place
“Well, I should really be going. I have to begin my 12-step Korean skincare regimen.”

Finally, I saw the original Blade Runner back in university (it’s a little before my time) and I don’t remember thinking all that much of it, apart from digging Sean Young’s outfit. Now that the new Blade Runner is out, I thought I should give it a rewatch. (All of this goes for Mr. Fivezero, as well, except the Sean Young part.) Mr. Fivezero finished it, said it was better than he initially thought, but it’s not love. I fell asleep. So I need to rewatch it…again.

But whatever. Hooray! Brooklyn Nine-Nine is back!

What I Saw

  • What We Do In the Shadows [2014]
  • The IT Crowd (Series 1–2) [2006]
  • Mindhunter (Season 1) [2017]
  • Stranger Things (Season 2) [2017]

What I Started Watching

  • Blade Runner [1982]
  • Brooklyn Nine-Nine (Season 5) [2017]
  • Mr. Robot (Season 3) [2017]
  • The Blacklist (Season 1) [2013]
  • Jack Whitehall: Travels with My Father (Series 1) [2017]
  • The Good Place (Season 1) [2016]

Movie & TV Roundup: September 2017

Once again, in September I saw mostly a mix of thriller/horror films and kid-friendly movies. There’s a surprising amount of Stephen King adaptations out recently: The Dark Tower, which I saw in August, and The Mist TV series, which I saw this month, and of course, It.

I’m dying to see It in the cinema, but we’ll have to wait for November. It should still be in cinemas, now that it has become the highest grossing horror movie of all time, after just four weeks. Maybe I’ll have more nail polish swatches up, then, since I probably won’t be able to sleep for a week after watching it.

What I Saw

  • The Wave (Bølgen) [2015]
  • Blue Ruin [2013]
  • Black Mirror: San Junipero (Series 3, Ep. 4) [2016]
  • Hop [2011]
  • Sing [2016]
  • Stardust [2007] (rewatch)
  • Wonder Woman [2017]
  • Baby Driver [2017]
  • Breaking the Magician’s Code (Season 1) [1997]
  • White Gold (Series 1) [2017]
  • The Mist (Season 1) [2017]

TIFF 2017: Red Carpet Roundup

It occurred to me that I had a red carpet roundup opportunity right in my own backyard last week with the Toronto International Film Festival!

I didn’t spot any stars around, but I don’t usually hang out at the trendy spots, either. I mean, Angelina Jolie’s not going to swing by my local grocery store to pick up a mesh bag of avocados.

As with yesterday’s Emmys roundup, I’m starting off with my favorites:

Top 7 TIFF 2017 Looks
(in alphabetical order)

Halle Berry at the Kings premiere

This is perfect on someone like Halle—is that a hint of nipslip, though?

• • • • •

Jessica Chastain at the Molly’s Game premiere

Elegant, and the stardust sparkles are a pretty touch.

• • • • •

Bella Heathcote at the Professor Marston & The Wonder Women premiere

I wish she’d done simpler shoes with this, but I’m still loving it.

Emmy Awards 2017 Red Carpet roundup

Emmy Awards 2017: Red Carpet Roundup

I didn’t manage to catch the Emmys this year and, honestly, I rarely ever do. I think part of the reason is that they continuously ignore a lot of shows I think are fantastic. I can rattle off many recent examples: Hannibal, Justified, Black Sails, Community, Orphan Black, Legion, and until this year, The Americans…but the most egregious snub of all-time is probably The Wire!

Well, at least a few of my favorites got a lot of love this year (The Handmaid’s Tale, Stranger Things, Westworld), and even The Americans picked up a few nominations in what was possibly their least exciting season.

In any case, I did manage to check out the red carpet looks after the fact and here are my very inconsequential judgments.

We’ll start with my favorites!

Top 10 Emmy 2017 Looks

Ellie Kemper in Jenny Packham

1

I love this dress on its own, but it gets a boost with
a dazzling Ellie Kemper. This is a fabulous color on a redhead.

• • • • •

Rashida Jones in J. Mendel

2

Lovely. There’s a little bit of the zig zag girl illusion going on in the middle.
