fivezero's perfume tray, May 2018

Perfume Diary: May 2018

The idea of a perfume tray is one that I’ve partially subscribed to over the years, but recently, I haven’t really kept one. The fact remains that light (and heat) will ruin perfume, so I almost always prefer keeping perfumes in their original boxes. It makes it easier to organize them and move them, as well.

The main drawbacks of this, of course, are that I don’t get to enjoy the bottle designs and that it makes it annoying to actually use my perfume! Having to remove a perfume from its box and then replace it every time I want a spritz gets tiresome.

If you have a minimalist’s perfume wardrobe, then it’s a simple thing to display perfumes on your vanity, even by a window—you’ll likely go through the perfume fast enough that light and heat degradation aren’t a problem. My perfume collection is a larger one, so this doesn’t work well for me. I honestly do not recall the last time I finished a bottle of perfume! (Well, it was probably when I dropped a bottle of Clinique Happy about sixteen or seventeen years ago… Does it count if I gave bottles away?)

But I did use to keep a perfume tray out for the sake of convenience, and it displayed some of my most-worn scents. Sadly, after several years of sitting in indirect sunlight, the top notes have turned in my bottles of Burberry Brit EDT, Tracy by Ellen Tracy, Clinique Happy, and Calvin Klein Truth—at least the scents are fine once I get past the first couple of minutes of soured top notes. Britney Spears Fantasy fared well, but I think it’s because the bottle is semi-opaque. (You can tell I wasn’t keen on using more expensive or discontinued scents as guinea pigs!) Overall, my first attempt at a perfume tray didn’t work as well as I would have liked.Read More »

Happy National Fragrance Day! (2018)

Today is National Fragrance Day! I don’t know which nation this is from (probably not Canada), but I’ll celebrate it, anyway!

In honor of the day, I will round up all my Canadian drugstore perfume deals. For those who do not know, many locations of Shoppers Drug Mart and Rexall drugstores have clearance perfume shelves, where they rotate perfumes priced at CA$19.99. Occasionally, Shoppers even has weekend deals for $17.77!

These perfumes are often the cheaper drugstore lines (drugstore staples and celeb scents), but occasionally one will also find discontinued smaller sizes of designer fragrances that usually go for a lot more! It’s well worth it to swing by the clearance shelf once a week.

Here are the ones I’ve picked up over the years:

Isabella Rossellini Manifesto EDT (50 mL)
ISABELLA ROSSELLINI
Manifesto EDT (50 mL)

basil, pepper, bergamot, lily, orange blossom, musk

This is a super old one in my collection! To be honest, I haven’t used it in forever; hope it hasn’t turned. But it is quite a lovely herbal green scent.

Oscar de la Renta So de la Renta EDP (30 mL)
OSCAR DE LA RENTA
So de la Renta EDP (30 mL)

kiwi, mango, watermelon, white florals, lotus, peony, musk

This remains one of my very favorite florals. It’s light and bright, youthful yet completely classy, and supremely easy to wear. My bottle is very old, so I don’t know if the certainly reformulated version out today compares. But I do love the original.

National Fragrance Day: 20 Favorite Bottle Designs in My Perfume Collection

It’s National Fragrance Day! To celebrate, I’ve compiled a list of favorite perfume bottles in my collection. I’ve previously done a list of perfumes I want just for the bottles, so I thought this would be a fun one to do, as well.

I’m not wearing any of these scents today, though. Test driving ’90s classic Tommy Girl (which comes in a perfectly serviceable bottle, but it’s certainly not one of my favorites).

ANNICK GOUTAL — Heure Exquise & Les Nuits d’Hadrien

Many of Annick Goutal’s fragrances come in this signature bottle and tagged with a ribbon and a card. The style is old-fashioned and very beautiful. The glass bottle’s ribbing is reminiscent of gathered tulle.

Haulage! Drugstores & Cosmetic Love (Oct 2016 & Feb–Mar 2017)

Finally, everyone in the household is on the road to recovery! I managed to stay relatively illness-free, except for once when I think I might have given myself food poisoning and had an upset stomach for a night. We were all so overwhelmed over the last week and a half that my husband actually had to remind me that we forgot about our 17th wedding anniversary over the weekend.

I should really get my computer to remind me about stuff like this.

So, we celebrated last night with some dinner delivered and half a movie (The Nice Guys, if you’re interested—and that’s how we have to roll nowadays, early to bed). Plus, we’ll add a li’l anniversary money to our fun budgets!

Speaking of fun budgets, here’s some stuff I hauled over the last couple of months from drugstores. And I’m including some stuff I got from Cosmetic Love late last year, but totally forgot about under my desk.

All prices are what I paid, not necessarily the MSRP.

Happy National Fragrance Day! A Roundup of Some Old Faves

It’s National Fragrance Day, and I though I rarely post about perfume, I thought I’d share five of my favorites in honor of the event.

Balmain Jolie Madame edt

Jolie Madame is a bit of an oldie, and has recently been discontinued by Balmain. They do seem to be in the process of revamping their fragrance lineup, so one can only hope that they will restore Jolie Madame to their library. I only own the newer version of Jolie Madame, and not the 1953 vintage that was created by Germaine Cellier. (Within the last ten years or so, many fragrances have required reformulation thanks to the EU’s stringent IRFA regulations.) Still, I think it smells wonderful, kind of like the inside of a chic lady’s leather handbag. It contains many notes, but I mostly get leather, violet, tobacco, and vetiver. I try to use it a lot more sparingly now, since it’s been discontinued. I’m thinking of just spritzing it into some of my handbags and enjoying it that way!

Happy 2016! With a Perfume Roundup

I’m awfully late now, but Happy New Year!

It’s the first Tuesday of 2016, and I finally have a moment to get back to blogging. It feels like an eternity to me, but it’s amazingly only five days into January.

I don’t know about you, but it’s been a hectic holiday season for me, and I miscalculated how much it would take out of me! I’m still catching up on sleep, but am being foiled by also attempting to do all kinds of errands, chores, and spring cleaning. I apologize for letting the swatches suffer, but to be fair, my nails have taken quite the beating amidst all the cooking—and eating! Ha! So, you wouldn’t have wanted to see my raggedy-ass cuticles sporting new polishes, anyway.

I’m honestly too exhausted at the moment to haul out the lightbox setup and take photos of my latest hauls (what did you guys all get for the holidays, huh?!), so I’m doing a roundup of the fragrances I picked up over 2015.

I rarely post about perfume, but I am a little bit of a perfume junkie. The worst thing is that I’ve currently been avoiding wearing any fragrance at all (this will be explained in the near future in another post) but it doesn’t stop me from sampling every time I’m at the mall, department store, or drugstore!

Last year, I was left unimpressed by Nina Ricci’s L’Extase (my links will be from Fragrantica, where I try to keep my profile up-to-date), Oscar de la Renta’s Extraordinary, Givenchy’s Rêve d’Escapade, YSL’s Black Opium, and, sadly enough since I adore the handbag-shaped bottle, Marc Jacobs’ Decadence.

What did I like? There weren’t many, but I also didn’t try as many as I usually do. I enjoyed Thierry Mugler Les Exceptions Oriental Express, but probably not enough to purchase it. I liked Eau de Gaga from Lady Gaga, but don’t think I’d buy it, either, unless it was super cheap. My Burberry was nice, but didn’t feel like anything particularly special, especially for the price.

What did I actually acquire last year? A total of 15.5 bottles, some of which were free/gifts. Here’s the rundown:

Barbara Bui Le Parfum edp
Barbara Bui — Le Parfum. A really warm and cozy amber that I sampled years ago, but it’s been discontinued. Someone on MUA tipped me off that it was available and quite cheap from some seller on Amazon, so I pounced!Read More »
