The fourth face cleanser I’m reviewing this week is another cleansing oil, this time from Julep, an American brand. They started off making nail polish, but have successfully expanded their line to include makeup and skincare, and their skincare in particular is inspired by Korean beauty (Julep founder Jane Park is Korean-American). You’ll find in their skincare lineup products like cleansing sticks, konjac sponges, sheet masks, and the first item of Julep skincare I’ve tried: Love Your Bare Face Hydrating Cleansing Oil.

From Julep:

A lightweight, antioxidant-rich oil blend that melts away makeup and impurities without stripping your skin. This Korean skincare secret is formulated for all skin types.

To use: Pump into dry hands and massage over dry face to dissolve makeup, dirt, and impurities. Rinse thoroughly with warm water. For best results, use with a Konjac Sponge.

At this point, I’ve still only used three cleansing oils: Josie Maran Argan Cleansing Oil, The Face Shop Rice Water Bright Cleansing Light Oil, and Julep Love Your Bare Face. Josie Maran’s has a thick, honey-like texture; The Face Shop’s has a runny, liquid texture. Julep’s is closer to Josie Maran’s, but maybe a smidge less thick, which means it doesn’t drag as much when applied on dry skin. Like Josie Maran’s, it also has a similar citrus-y smell and yellow hue. In this review, I’ll be comparing Julep’s cleansing oil a lot with Josie Maran’s cleansing oil, since I found the two of them to be fairly similar in texture and performance.

This review has been a long time coming! The Face Shop’s popular Rice Water Bright Cleansing Light Oil is the first Korean cleansing oil I ever tried. I’ve been using it off and on over the last year and a half, and I think it makes a very good starter cleansing oil if you have never used on before.

First of all, it is quite inexpensive. I paid a little under US$8, shipped, on sale at Cosmetic Love (link in the sidebar) back in 2015. The price has gone up a bit since then, but it’s still available for under $10 at Jolse. If you’re in Canada, the official Face Shop site has it for CA$18. There is a non-Light version available, as well (CA$15).

The packaging has also changed a little bit, but I think it’s just in the labeling. The bottle and its very nice pump mechanism appear to have remained the same. Here’s the new package:

Julep shipping box

Julep — Maven Boxes (July–September 2017) & Gobs More!

OK, so this is something of a haulage megapost, because I slacked all summer and only posted the unboxing of my first Julep Maven Box.

Now, not only do I have my Maven Boxes for July, August, and September for you (note that I didn’t skip any months even though Julep gives you the option to do so as much as you’d like), but I also have mini hauls that I got in-between boxes. Julep is constantly running little deals that are so hard for me to resist, particularly since shipping is always free.

And, it’s not just the free shipping. My Julep orders arrive so, so fast, and I’m in Canada! It’s amazing. I literally got my most recent order in two days. There’s never a customs charge, either (though I have never placed an order over US$33).

In addition, their boxes come so neatly packed and easy to open. You just snip the little bit of strapping tape on the front and it opens up with no hassle.

I’m super happy with Julep after four boxes, and I’ll definitely be resubscribing after my six-month subscription comes to an end. I think I should have enough Julep points (“Jules”) by then to get a free Maven Box, too. I posted my first Julep swatch last Friday (hint: it’s a purty one), and you can look forward to many more!

Without further ado, here is my Julep summer haulage. It’s a biggie.

June 2017 (Order #2)

  • Zodiac Nail Color in Gemini
  • Zodiac Nail Color in Glowing Gemini

Julep Zodiac Nail Colors in Gemini, Glowing Gemini

Julep ran a BOGO sale right after I got my first Maven Box, so I picked up two of the Zodiac polishes, twin polishes Gemini and Glowing Gemini! Baby Olive is a Gemini, though these are pretty polishes in their own right, and I’d have picked them up, anyway.

Every month when you select products for your Maven Box, you’re given a limited (but still pretty good) selection to choose from. If there are specific items or polish shades you’re looking for, you may have to wait a while—otherwise, Julep’s sales are the best time to pick them up.

(You can use Ebates Canada [referral link] with these purchases, too! It’s been consistently 1.5% cash back since I’ve been with Julep. I can’t use Ebates with my monthly boxes, though, since they’re prepaid with my 6-month subscription. Any add-ons I buy with my boxes don’t get an official “check out” so Ebates doesn’t work then.)

Haulage! The Ordinary by Deciem, Part I (March 2017)

DECIEM — The Ordinary “Buffet” Multi-Technology Peptide Serum Review

This review is a long time coming! I’ve had a bit of a skincare misadventure over the summer, but now, I’ve finally used DECIEM’s popular “Buffet” peptide serum for several months and feel that I can give it a more detailed review.

Earlier this year, I was looking to overhaul my fairly basic skincare routine and picked up several skincare products from DECIEM’s The Ordinary, a line of pared-down products. I was never much of a serum-user, as my routine pretty much consisted of cleanser plus moisturizer, but having read a lot about serums—and about the Korean 10-step skincare routine, in particular—I was determined to expand my skincare horizons.

The first product from The Ordinary that I worked into a routine was the much talked-about “Buffet” Multi-Technology Peptide Serum, which retails at a quite low price of CA$14.80. Other peptide serums can cost upwards of a couple hundred dollars, for the same 30 mL, so I was both very curious to see how effective The Ordinary’s product could be.

Peptide Serum Price Comparison Chart

For reference, here are some prices of peptide serums on beautyBOUTIQUE/Shoppers Drug Mart, Sephora Canada, and Well.ca. All prices are in Canadian dollars. For products available in multiple sizes, I used the largest, most cost-effective size.

Before I started, I didn’t realize there were so many! But hey, gotta add them all.

Josie Maran Argan Cleansing Oil (55 mL)

Josie Maran — Argan Cleansing Oil Review

I started using cleansing oil for the first time about a year and a half ago—definitely late to the party! Silly me, I didn’t start off with a Korean brand, but with Josie Maran.

As a 30-something, my formative years were mostly in the early to mid-90s, and as a result I am strongly partial to the supermodels of that period—Shalom Harlow, Cindy Crawford, Tyra Banks, and Niki Taylor are among my favorites—and few of the modern crop do much for me. (This is how I know I’m getting old.) One model I especially adored, who was often spotted in Maybelline advertisements, was Josie Maran.

I had no idea Josie was working for Maybelline even in 2003! Here she is, albeit looking heavily Photoshopped—peddling one of my favorite vintage polish lines, Wet Shine.

Anyway, I recognized the name straight away when I saw her line of argan oil-based skincare at Sephora—Josie Maran Cosmetics was launched in 2007—and after a little review-reading, I picked up a 3-piece Argan Skincare Ritual set that came with deluxe sizes of her cleansing oil, moisturizer, and argan oil.
