Lumene Blueberry Curl Waterproof Mascara

Lumene — Blueberry Curl Waterproof Mascara (Rich Black) Review

As someone with short and stubbornly straight eyelashes, I’m always on the lookout for the next best waterproof mascara. For the record, my longtime favorites are CoverGirl Professional Waterproof and Maybelline Full ‘n Soft Waterproof (which is inexplicably no longer available on the Canadian market).

A year or two ago, I happened to see a waterproof mascara recommendation for lashes like mine, by a Finnish company called Lumene. I haven’t tried much in the way of Scandinavian cosmetics (just GOSH, H&M, and IsaDora, I think), and it seemed interesting enough to try out. It was available on Amazon to US addresses, so I had it mailed to family who brought it up for me.

I finally got around to trying this mascara last month—actually it looks like I waited too long, because Lumene have now revamped their lineup, and the closest product to this Blueberry Curl Waterproof Mascara is the new Blueberry Wild Curl Waterproof Mascara. The packaging kind of looks the same, so I’m hoping it’s just been renamed and is basically the same product.

Lumene Blueberry Curl Waterproof Mascara in Rich Black

  • The flexible plastic brush thickens and curls the lashes perfectly with no clumps
  • 100 percent organic arctic blueberry seed oil nourishes lashes and helps to keep them strong and conditioned
  • The flat brush with rounded sides lifts the lashes and gives a curled and curved result
  • The cone shaped soft and flexible plastic bristles grip the lashes and give them color from root to tip while efficiently separating them

Here are the ingredient lists from my old version and the new version. It looks like there are only minor differences in ingredient order (and a fixed typo).

Earth Day 2017: The Lazy Person’s Guide to Saving the World (United Nations)

Today is Earth Day 2017, and my goal for our family this year is to eat more vegetables and fruits, rather than meat. Eating and generally consuming things more sustainably will be an ongoing focus for us.

Every day will be Earth Day!

The United Nations has published “The Lazy Person’s Guide to Saving the World“, which is well worth reading.

End extreme poverty. Fight inequality and injustice. Fix climate change. Whoa. The Global Goals are important, world-changing objectives that will require cooperation among governments, international organizations and world leaders. It seems impossible that the average person can make an impact. Should you just give up?

No! Change starts with you. Seriously. Every human on earth—even the most indifferent, laziest person among us—is part of the solution. Fortunately, there are some super easy things we can adopt into our routines that, if we all do it, will make a big difference.

We’ve made it easy for you and compiled just a few of the many things you can do to make an impact.

Here are some additional helpful links on sustainability:

Haulage! The Body Shop Post-Holiday Sale (January 2017)

I’ve been AWOL for a while! Apologies—I’m sure we’ve all been terribly busy with the start of the new year, and it’s been the same for me.

Here’s a quick post to remind you all that The Body Shop has clearanced their holiday products and (I presume) newly discontinued items, and the sales are pretty good! I know I like to complain about their products, as quite a lot I’ve tried aren’t all that great, but damn it’s hard to beat a good sale, isn’t it? And, they do have some gems here and there.

I placed two orders, one yesterday and another today when they reduced some prices even more. Plus, I have the Love Your Body 10% discount, which expires in May, so I should take advantage of it as much as I can. I don’t expect to renew the card this year.

Here’s the combined haulage:

Vanilla Chai Body Butter, Body Scrub, & Lip Balm

Vanilla Chai is a holiday limited edition scent, and I love it! This smells to me like a sweet chai with loads of vanilla. I don’t really get the eggnog vibe that some people are talking about—I definitely get chai. I know this because last year, I ordered the Body Butter, then totally forgot what scent I ordered when I slathered it on. I instantly thought, “This smells like sweet chai!” and not, “Mmm, eggnog.” And I love eggnog. A scent for next Christmas, perhaps?

I don’t like the Lip Butters I’ve tried; hopefully this one will be better since it is called Lip Balm and comes in a tin. At least I know I’ll like the scent!

Josie Maran Argan Cleansing Oil (55 mL)

Josie Maran — Argan Cleansing Oil Review

I started using cleansing oil for the first time about a year and a half ago—definitely late to the party! Silly me, I didn’t start off with a Korean brand, but with Josie Maran.

As a 30-something, my formative years were mostly in the early to mid-90s, and as a result I am strongly partial to the supermodels of that period—Shalom Harlow, Cindy Crawford, Tyra Banks, and Niki Taylor are among my favorites—and few of the modern crop do much for me. (This is how I know I’m getting old.) One model I especially adored, who was often spotted in Maybelline advertisements, was Josie Maran.

I had no idea Josie was working for Maybelline even in 2003! Here she is, albeit looking heavily Photoshopped—peddling one of my favorite vintage polish lines, Wet Shine.

Anyway, I recognized the name straight away when I saw her line of argan oil-based skincare at Sephora—Josie Maran Cosmetics was launched in 2007—and after a little review-reading, I picked up a 3-piece Argan Skincare Ritual set that came with deluxe sizes of her cleansing oil, moisturizer, and argan oil.

The Body Shop Chocomania Sugar Body Scrub

The Body Shop — Chocomania Sugar Body Scrub Review

After being less than enamored of the last body scrub I tried from The Body Shop—Vineyard Peach Cream Body Scrub—I went out and bought two more since they were on sale. Typical me! I also picked up the Love Your Body Rewards Card, which gives a 10% discount, so obviously I needed to spend more, hahaha…

This time, I picked scrubs in two different formulas, though. The Vineyard Peach scrub was not-very-scrubtacular; the two new ones I got seem to have scrubbier formulas, or so I hoped. I spent CA$11 on each scrub, with an additional Love Your Body 10% discount and 15% cashback at eBates Canada. That should work out to a little under CA$8.50 per scrub.

The first scrub, which I have actually used up (I know!), is the Chocomania Sugar Body Scrub.

From The Body Shop (Canada):

This exfoliating body scrub has a decadently chocolatey scent and leaves skin feeling softer and smoother. It contains real cocoa butter and organic cane sugar.

Firstly, the Chocomania scrub smells really nice and chocolate-y! Well, it’s probably a little more cocoa than chocolate, but either way I do like it. It’s like a dark cocoa, without any overpowering sugariness. It also doesn’t have that weird afterscent that the Vineyard Peach scent had.

Andalou Naturals Avo Cocoa Skin Food Mask vs Ferrero Nutella

Andalou Naturals — Avo Cocoa Skin Food Mask Review

I purchased Andalou Naturals Avo Cocoa Skin Food Mask sometime last year after reading some good reviews of the same brand’s Pumpkin Honey Glycolic Mask. I chose to go with the Avo Cocoa mask instead, since it’s meant for dry skin, unlike the Pumpkin mask for normal/combination skin.

While I liked one of Andalou Naturals’ shampoos, I hadn’t tried any of their skincare before. After using this Avo Cocoa mask intermittently for about six months, I must say that I am really pleased with this product.

Like the shampoo I had success with, this product is also from Andalou’s line of “Fruit Stem Cell Science” products. I don’t believe a bit of the frankly strange claim that plant stem cells will make human skin look younger when applied to the skin, but this product does contain some nice ingredients, anyway.

Andalou Naturals Avo Cocoa Skin Food Mask

From Andalou Naturals:

For Dry & Very Dry Skin

Fruit Stem Cell Complex, organic avocado, Vitamin E, and pure dark cocoa, abundant in antioxidants and amino acids, effectively slow cellular damage and stimulate healthy cell renewal, replenishing moisture balance and dermal structure for soft, smooth skin.

OUR DIFFERENCE: Fruit Stem Cell Science® and 3 Levels of Synergistic Age Defying Innovation in Every Product:

‘Clinically proven advanced plant power harnessed and delivered to where you need it most.’

Fruit Stem Cell Science® renews skin at the cellular level. Award-winning Malus Domestica (Apple) and Solar Vitis (Grape) Stem Cells provide ‘universal’ cells to energize skin cell function for enhanced immunity, longevity and vitality. Fruit Stem Cell Science® accelerates the skin’s own ability to repair and replenish health cells effectively replacing older, weak and damaged cells. These universal cells become activated skin cells and elasticity and resilience are restored.

The ingredient list:

KEY INGREDIENTS:
Resveratrol Q10: Resveratrol combined with Coenzyme Q10; super antioxidant complex that helps to defy wrinkle formation, inhibit cellular damage, stimulate skin-firming collagen and elastin to decrease fine lines and smooth skin.

Cocoa Powder: Antioxidants and amino acids sustain healthy cells and protect against elemental damage.

Green Coffee Extract (caffeine): Perks up the complexion by stimulating blood circulation.

INGREDIENTS:
Aloe Barbadensis Juice*, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Powder*^, Vegetable Glycerin, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Butter*, Cetyl Alcohol, Cetearyl Glucoside, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter*^, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) and Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oils*, Cyamopsis Tetragonolobus (Guar) Gum*, Sclerotium Gum, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Saccharum Officinarum (Sugar Cane) Juice*, Fruit Stem Cells (Malus Domestica, Solar Vitis) and BioActive 8 Berry Complex*, Coffea Arabica (Coffee) Extract*, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Resveratrol, Ubiquinone (CoQ10), Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) and Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Oils*, Lecithin, Phenethyl Alcohol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Camellia Sinensis (White Tea) Extract*^

Non-GMO verified *Organic ^Fair Trade

First of all, it really does smell like cocoa! And, thankfully, it doesn’t smell like avocado, as well. It’s like a dark chocolate, slightly more liquid-y version of Nutella. Who hasn’t wanted to smear Nutella on their face, right? (No, I didn’t try that!)

Sale Alert: Fruits & Passion (Canada) + New Subscription Box

I don’t normally post sales from Fruits & Passion, who are kind of like a French Canadian Bath & Body Works, but I hauled a little bit from them this morning and it is related to a review I posted yesterday for Jelly Pong Pong’s most disappointing Lychee Shower Gel.

Their sales this weekend (both in-store and online) include:

  • Refill Event: Buy 2 refills for $40 (normally $28.50 each) or 3 refills for $50

  • Moisturizing Butters: 5 for $20
  • Foaming Hand Soaps: 3 for $20
  • Assorted travel sizes: 5 for $20
  • Assorted items: 3 for $20

Plus, get 5% cashback with eBates Canada (referral link). Shipping in Canada is free when you spend $45 or more.

Fruits & Passion sale, March 2016

The only drawback with shopping online is that their selection seems a bit poor, but I don’t have access to any physical locations, so I don’t have a choice. They used to have a location in the nearby Eaton Centre downtown, but it’s been closed for some time now.

So what did I haul from Fruits & Passion? It turns out they have a line of lychee-scented products being clearanced (dammit!). I managed to snag a travel-sized body scrub, woohoo! I would actually have bought a couple more, but I don’t know what it smells like or how good the body scrub is, so I decided against gambling.

My haulage:
