fivezero's Topbox, November 2017

Topbox — November 2017

Well, I’m still subscribed to Canadian subscription box Topbox (referral link)! I didn’t expect to be, but they stepped up their game a bit over the last two months, which justified the low CA$12 shipped price for me.

Here’s my November 2017 box, which I’m late in posting. I have a couple of Topbox special collection boxes to post, as well as my December 2017 box, as well.

What I Received in My Topbox (November 2017)

  • China Glaze Nail Lacquer in Dope Taupe (0.5 oz) [CA$8]
  • Elizabeth Arden Lasting Impression Mascara in Lasting Black (2.5 mL sample) [CA$32 / US$24 for 8.5 mL, value: CA$9.41]
  • Laritzy Silicone Makeup Blender [US$14]
  • Sebastian Professional Shaper Plus+ Extra Hold Hairspray (38.5 g sample) [CA$19 for 300 g, value: CA$2.44]

Also, because I submitted a mild complaint the previous month (about getting disappointing, itty bitty samples two months running), they sent me a bonus this month:

  • BeneFit Dandelion Shy Beam (4 mL sample) [CA$35 for 10 mL, value: CA$14]

Box Cost = CA$12 + 1.56 tax, free shipping

Total Box Value = CA$8 + CA$9.41 + US$14 + CA$2.44 ≈ CA$37.55

Unfortunately, I already own China Glaze Dope Taupe, but it’s still nice that they sent a polish. It’s just a shame it isn’t from a more recent collection, so I’d have been less likely to own it.

fivezero's Topbox, October 2017

Topbox — October 2017

Canadian subscription box Topbox (referral link) is one of those things that’s so cheap that it can be hard for me to justify dropping it…but I think I’m close to being done with them, again. Each month, I am pretty underwhelmed, and I think I’d be better off just buying one or two nail polishes each month with the CA$13.56 it costs me, after tax. At least I know I’d be happy with what I got.

I mean, after last month’s 2 mL Michael Kors fragrance vial and this month’s miniscule BeneFit sample, I think they’re no longer living up to the “4 deluxe samples” promise.

Oh, and this month, I also got the option to pony up $10 for a Beauty Surprise, so I did it. ‘Cause I’m a glutton for punishment.

I’m going to give them one more month—hey, maybe I’ll actually see a Privé box I’d rather have, for once. If it’s a bust, Topbox are out for the second time.

All prices are in CA$ unless otherwise noted.

What I Got as a $10 Beauty Surprise

  • Doucce Freematic Eye Shadow Quad in Autumn Leaves (7)

Beauty Surprise Cost = CA$10 + $1.13 tax, free shipping

Item Value = US$35

What I Received in my Topbox

  • BeneFit Foolproof Brow Powder in Deep 05 (0.01 g) [CA$32 for 2 g, value: CA$0.16]
  • The Body Shop 100% Vegetarian Expert Face Masks (Japanese Matcha Tea Pollution Clearing Mask & Himalayan Charcoal Purifying Glow Mask) (2 × 5 mL) [CA$28 for 75 mL, value: CA$3.73]
  • Redken Pillow Proof Blow Dry Two Day Extender in Clear (1.2 oz) [CA$24.99 for 3.4 oz, value: CA$8.82]
  • Skin & Co Roma Truffle Therapy Essential Face Toner (30 mL) [US$27 for 200 mL, value: US$4.05]
  • Wella EIMI Perfect Me (6 mL) (freebie) [CA$19.66 for 100 mL, value: CA$1.18]

Box Cost = CA$12 + 1.56 tax, free shipping

Total Item Value = CA$0.16 + CA$3.73 + CA$8.82 + US$4.05 + CA$1.18 ≈ CA$18.95

Ahahahahahahahahahaha!

Zoolander 2, lame, Owen Wilson

The box also came with a couple of coupons. One is for 20% off the masks from The Body Shop. I think it’s a coupon. There’s no barcode or anything, just says I can “Enjoy 20% off” if I bring it in-store. Super. The second came with the Wella freebie, and gives 50% off any Wella EIMI styling product at Chatters.ca (the online code is EIMI50), and it’s valid through the end of this year.

Soooo, ignoring the fact that I have a “deluxe sample” in my box worth 16 Canadian cents—we don’t even use pennies here anymore!!!—the bulk of my box’s value lies in the Redken dry shampoo. Also, I have no full-sized items this month; all are samples.

Hask Charcoal with Citrus Oil Purifying Shampoo

Hask — Charcoal with Citrus Oil Purifying Shampoo Review

I was recently in the market for a new clarifying shampoo and decided to go with Hask since I was already enjoying their Monoï Coconut Oil Deep Nourishing Conditioner (samples of which I’ve received twice in subscription boxes).

From Hask:

Check your (hair) baggage at the door with HASK Charcoal with Citrus Oil collection!

Hair weighing you down? It’s time for a detox! Introducing HASK Purifying Charcoal Collection – a complete line that features a Shampoo, Conditioner, and Deep Conditioner that are formulated to give you a deep clean and bring hair back to life.

Whether you rely on dry shampoo to maintain your weekly blowouts or reach for sprays and gels regularly, overdoing it with product can create build-up that weighs your hair down and can seriously cramp your style. Charcoal, a hero ingredient derived from coconut shells in the Philippines, acts as a magnet and attracts and removes impurities – like product build-up – so you are left with hair that is full of body and shine. For an extra boost of radiance, HASK purifying charcoal combined with vitamin C-rich lemon and grapefruit oils, invigorates and clarifies hair without stripping away any moisture.

At the moment, there isn’t a great selection of sulfate-free shampoos at the drugstore, so it’s wonderful to find one that is easy-to-find and inexpensive. (I also like the L’Oréal Ever* line). A bonus with Hask is that the packaging is pretty swell, too:

Hask Charcoal with Citrus Oil Purifying Shampoo

The ingredient list (lifted from Ulta.com):

Water/Eau (Aqua), Sodium C14-16 olefin sulfonate, Cocamidopropyl betadine, Cocamide MEA, Glycerin, Glycol stearate, Charcoal powder*, Citrus paradise (grapefruit) peel oil, Citrus medical limnonym (lemon) peel oil, Hydrolyzed soy protein, Panthenol (vitamin B5), Dimethiconol, Sodium hydroxide, Sodium chloride, Polyquaternium-7, Dicaprylyl ether, Decyl glycoside, Glyceryl oblate, Cyclopentasiloxane, Phenoxyethanol, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Fragrance/Perfume (Fragancia) (*Activated charcoal/Charbon active).

Haulage! Giveaway Prize & UK Swap with Helpless Whilst Drying (June 2016)

Back in March, one of my favorite beauty bloggers, Rachael of Helpless Whilst Drying (as a nail polish addict, I’ve gotta love that blog name!) celebrated her 2-year blogiversary and held a fantastic giveaway! I was one of the lucky runners-up and of course, I selected a Lottie London nail polish as my prize.

As it turned out, Rachael is in the UK and the Royal Mail apparently updated their international mail prohibited list to include nail polish! I felt quite awful that Rachael had spent so much effort just finding the nail color I’d requested, only to be told that she couldn’t mail it overseas to Canada, so we did what any beauty-product lovers would do: We decided to have a swap!

We set a budget (about GBP£33/CAD$60), exchanged some ideas of what we’d like from the other country, and off we went shopping! I had loads of fun shopping for Rachael’s goodies! It’s been ages since I’ve done an international swap—those are always the best to me, since I love trying out brands from other countries.

But, of course, even more fun was receiving my parcel from Rachael! I think we were blessed by the swap gods or something, because both of us received our parcels very quickly. I don’t think it took much over a week. Well done, Royal Mail and Canada Post! I guess we were also lucky that nothing got held up in customs, as well.

Without further ado, here’s the haulage!

Haulage! Yves Rocher — Pop’Exotic Botanical Colour Nail Polish (Summer 2016)

Yves Rocher recently released their juicy summer collection of Botanical Colour Nail Polishes (Pop’Exotic), and since these are amongst my favorite nail polishes, I got them all in one fell swoop. It helps that Yves Rocher sent me a coupon I could use on top of a sweet online deal!

The deal: Botanical Colour Nail Polishes on sale for CA$3.50 instead of the usual CA$6 (this is not an unusual sale for Yves Rocher—basically, you want at least 40% off when you buy from them!). Additional coupon for $10 off plus free shipping with a $40 order. And loads of GWP! More freebies if you spend $45. See how they get you?

The haulage (prices not including the $10 off I got at the end of the order):

  • Botanical Colour Nail Polish in Exotic Peach (CA$3.50, was $6)
  • Botanical Colour Nail Polish in Frosted Mint (CA$3.50, was $6)
  • Botanical Colour Nail Polish in Iced Litchi (CA$3.50, was $6)
  • Botanical Colour Nail Polish in Pomegranate Pink (CA$3.50, was $6)
  • Botanical Colour Nail Polish in Raspberry Sorbet (CA$3.50, was $6)
  • Botanical Colour Nail Polish in Tropical Orange (CA$3.50, was $6)
  • Botanical Colour Nail Polish in Water Mint (CA$3.50, was $6)
  • Botanical Colour Nail Polish in Yuzu Yellow (CA$3.50, was $6)
  • Sensitive Végétal Anti-Redness Moisturizing Cream (50 mL) (CA$14, was $28)
  • Sexy Pulp Ultra-Volume Mascara (mini) (2.5 mL) (CA$14, was $28) [for some reason, the website lists this as Sexy Pulp Lash Plumping Mascara, but the product label reads Ultra-Volume, so I’m going with that.]

The following were GWP items:
