Jelly Pong Pong — Lychee Gel Softening Shower & Bath Gel

I received a full-sized Lychee Gel Softening Shower & Bath Gel in my most recent Luxe Box. It was one of the items that I was most excited about, mainly because of how cute the packaging is, and that I love lychees (or litchis)!

The lychee is native to southeastern China, and it’s now cultivated in many tropical regions worldwide. My extended family is from Malaysia, in southeast Asia, and because of this I have been lucky enough to have eaten heaps of lychees, practically fresh off the trees! The skin of the fruit is a bumpy pinkish red, thin and pliable so it’s easy to peel off the delicate, white, and very juicy flesh. The flavor is sweet, floral, and honeyed—I don’t think there’s any other fruit that tastes quite like it.

Lychees are also available canned in most Asian shops, though, of course, they won’t taste quite as delicious as the fresh fruit. I’m particularly fond of canned lychees served on ice. A Thai restaurant near me also serves a chicken-and-lychee dish served in a hollowed out pineapple—it sounds weird, but it works amazingly well!

So, as you can tell, I’m a little crazy about this fruit, and it’s not often that I come across a perfume or bath product that is lychee-scented. (Fragrantica says that good options are Juliette Has a Gun’s Miss Charming, Sonia Rykiel Rose, and Diptyque Eau Rose are good options with lychee as one of the centerpiece notes, so I’ll definitely need to check these out! I’m just so sad I missed out on Yves Rocher’s soliflore—solifruit?version, since those tend to be really nice.)

Luxe Box (Canada) — Spring 2016

So, I forgot to cancel my Luxe Box (referral link) subscription late last year, and this arrived in the mail yesterday.

Luxe Box is a seasonal box that costs $26 per quarter, though you can get a slight discount for signing up for more boxes at a time. I signed up with the semi-annual option: two boxes for $25 each. The annual option gives you four boxes for $24 each. Shipping is included, at least for the Canadian options.

You receive 7–8 items in each curated Luxe Box (I got 5 full-sized items and 2 trial-sizes this season). I did not take up the $10 “Beauty Surprise” option, even though I was pleased with what I got the one time I did.

What I Received

All prices in CA$, unless otherwise noted.

Luxe Box

  • BENEFIT The POREfessional Primer (3 mL, sample) [MSRP $37 for 22 mL]
  • BIODERMA Sébium AI Correcteur 2-in-1 Tinted Skin Perfecting Care for Acne Prone Skin in Light/Clair (30 mL, full size) [MSRP is I think ~US$24.95]
  • JELLY PONG PONG Softening Shower & Bath Gel in Lychee Gel (30 mL, full size) [MSRP US$15.95]
  • MASKERAIDE All Eyes On Me Hydrating Eye Gel Patches (4.7 g, 1 single-use pair of eye gels) [MSRP $25/box of 4 pairs]
  • MORGAN TAYLOR Professional Nail Lacquer in Eye Candy (15 mL, full size) [MSRP $15.83—holy heck! What?!]
  • POP BEAUTY Kajal Pen in Inky Purple (0.9 g, full size) [MSRP US$10]
  • SCHICK Hydro Silk Razor (1 reusable razor & 1 cartridge) [MSRP $12.64]

Random Additional Items

  • BENEFIT coupon for 3500 Shoppers Drug Mart Optimum Bonus Points when purchasing The POREfessional (if you shop online at beautyBOUTIQUE, you can use the code NOPORES, which expires April 16, 2016)
  • SCHICK coupon for $5 off any Hydro Silk refills

Here’s a quick rundown of what I think about each item (sorry, I don’t have pics of each individual item as my camera’s acting up again; guess I need to fiddle with it some more pics added!):

Quick Rundown

BENEFIT The POREfessional Primer
(3 mL, sample) [MSRP $37 for 22 mL]
I don’t really use primer, so this is kind of meh for me. BeneFit stuff seems excessively pricy to me, and I’ve rarely liked any of the few BeneFit items I’ve tried.

Not the Most Auspicious Start with Birchbox (Canada) — April 2015

Birchbox April 2015, box by Rifle Paper Co.

When subscription box Birchbox finally came to Canada late last year, I thought about subscribing, but I had only been with Ipsy for a couple of months, so I thought I’d lay off signing up with anything new for a while.

Of course, curiosity got the better of me and I recently signed up with Birchbox (referral link), anyway. It costs the same as Ipsy (CA$14.95/mo, shipping and taxes included), and I have, for the most part, enjoyed getting my Ipsy Glam Bags (referral link). At the very least, even if I don’t care for the products in the end, I usually enjoy trying them!

My main reservation with Birchbox was that they seem to focus more on skincare than makeup, and I much prefer trying out new makeup and nail polish over skincare and haircare.

Well, it’s sad to say, but my reservations were not totally unfounded. Birchbox shipped my first box very quickly, and I received it just this week. I had filled out my Birchbox profile to say I preferred to receive Makeup and Nail products (and ticked the box for YAY FRAGRANCE SAMPLES PLEASE), and here is what I got:

  • Rifle Paper Co. floral print paper box
  • BeautyBlender Original Mini with BlenderCleanser Mini
  • Beaver Professional Hydro Nutritive Shampoo Mini
  • Beaver Professional Hydro Nutritive Conditioner Mini
  • Jelly Pong Pong Glow Getter Luminizer in Ibiza Mini
  • Not Soap, Radio Body Wash Mini in Beach + Sky Blue Water

I don’t have any proper reviews, since I haven’t tried any of this stuff yet, but here’s the rundown:
