Chanel, Le Vernis Longwear in Rouge Puissant (528)

Chanel — Rouge Puissant (Le Vernis Longwear) Swatch & Review

Woohoo! It’s National Nail Polish Day, the city of Toronto is on a high, and today is also the Champions League Final—it kicks off in less than two hours in Madrid! I could do nothing else other than swatch a gloriously red nail polish for the blog.

Rouge Puissant (528) has been in Chanel’s Le Vernis Longwear lineup for a while now, but I only just got around to picking it up (yay SDM points!). It’s actually a little boring, but I am probably just saying that because I have a lot of red nail polish, and there are many that I prefer. Rouge Puissant runs medium-deep. Under bright light, it appears to be quite a bright medium red, but in dimmer light it looks like a significantly deeper shade. It looks medium in my swatches due to the light.

The red itself is a fairly true red, leaning a smidge to the blue side. That’s probably why I don’t like it as much as some other reds—I tend to prefer warm tomato reds, browned reds, or vibrantly pink reds. I think Rouge Puissant would be really classy on someone with cool- to neutral-toned skin.

Oh, and if you’re wondering, puissant means powerful, important, influential in English (I did not know that!); it means the same thing in French. “Powerful Red” it is.

Happy National Handbag Day! (October 10, 2018)

It’s the 6th National Handbag Day!

I actually haven’t acquired any new handbags for some time, nor do I have any seriously on my wishlist. So, to mark the occasion on this blog, I’ll do a quick roundup of 10 bags in my collection that I need to wear more often.

Adrienne Vittadini

Lenox Drawstring Pouch in Silver

I bought this ages ago, and I’m not sure why I rarely use it, since it is actually extremely comfortable to wear and holds a good amount! The leather is soft and subtly metallic. Aaah, I need to dig it out now!

Badgley Mischka

Jill Crossbody in Black

The main reason I don’t wear this as much is that the strap is a bit too long. I need to just go get an extra hole or two punched into the strap.

Chloé

Marcie Medium Satchel in Tan

My second-favorite bag of all-time, and yet, I don’t wear it as often as I should. Honestly, it is heavy and that is why I use it infrequently. Note to self: work out more so you can take Marcie out! Chloé has actually recently released a slightly smaller version of the Marcie which is just perfect for me. Maybe next year…

ALAÏA
Alaïa

Alaïa EDP 100 mL2015 | Marie Salamagne
Top Notes: airy notes, pink pepper
Heart Notes: freesia, peony
Base Notes: animalic notes, musk

I wanted very much to love the eponymous first fragrance from designer Alaïa, especially since the bottle is so beautiful, but it didn’t move me. It is deep and a bit dark, but also a little too cloying. I wouldn’t mind trying it again for a better grasp of it, but my initial impression is not very favorable. I don’t love any of the notes in it, so I suppose it is not a surprise that I didn’t fall for it.

The stunning bottle design echoes Alaïa’s gorgeous, laser cut handbags:

CACHAREL
Anaïs Anaïs EDT

Cacharel Anaïs Anaïs EDT 100 mL1978 | Roger Pellegrino, Robert Gonnon, Paul Leger, Raymond Chaillan
Top Notes: orange blossom, hyacinth
Heart Notes: rose, lily, jasmine
Base Notes: amber, sandalwood, incense

This one has been around for a long time, and while it’s never been one to which I paid much attention, I recently thought I’d resniff it. It has also recently been relaunched in EDP and EDT; I am pretty sure I tested the old version, since the bottle had the old style cap, which is as wide as the bottle itself.

Anaïs Anaïs is perfectly fine, and very 1980s-smelling. Strong, big florals, lots of powder. I don’t really have a reaction either way—I wouldn’t choose to wear it myself, but it smells fine.

I have seen this (and Cacharel Amor Amor) on the $19.99 rack at Shoppers Drug Mart, but maybe that’s just been to clear out the old bottles over the last year or two.

CACHAREL
Scarlett EDT

Cacharel Scarlett EDT 50 mL2009 | Honorine Blanc, Olivier Cresp, Alberto Morillas
Top Notes: citrus, tea, pear
Heart Notes: jasmine, orange blossom, honeysuckle
Base Notes: white musk, honey, sandalwood

Named for the character Scarlet O’Hara from Gone with the Wind, Scarlett is initially fairly pretty and clean-smelling, with bright citrus notes mingled with delicate white florals. It quickly turns into something musky and a little cloying—honey is often tricky for me this way.

I was quite surprised to see a tester for this older perfume at Shoppers Drug Mart recently! The adorable bottle doesn’t have anything written on it, and the box was nowhere to be found, so I had to squint at the tiny sticker on the bottom to figure out which fragrance it was.Read More »

Hello all!

I know I have been AWOL for a while, now—among other things, I have been hard at work on the nail polish database—a brand spanking new version is coming, with the ability to track your own collection. (‘Cause I personally really, really need to do that!)

For now, I can only offer up this rather long list of perfume notes that I have compiled over the month of January. As you can see, I’ve been doing a lot of huffing. This comes just in time for Valentine’s Day, which is tomorrow, in case you need some gift ideas for a lovely lady in your life!

philosophy Purity Made Simple One-Step Facial Cleanser

philosophy’s best-selling Purity Made Simple One-Step Facial Cleanser has been a staple in my bathroom for years. I don’t know exactly when philosophy started selling it, but reviews on MakeupAlley go back to 2001, so it’s been around for at least seventeen years. I’ve probably been using it for eight years or so…possibly longer. But I know I’ve repurchased it several times, usually in the 8 oz standard size that seems to last me about two or three years.

A little does go a long way, and I only use about a pea-sized dab each time, but the main the reason I take so long to go through it is that I often switch things up and use other products. If I were to guess, if I used it twice a day and every day, then the 8 oz bottle might last me around six months.

I only recently finished up a bottle I bought in 2014, so that’s the one I’ll be reviewing today. I assume philosophy haven’t gone and changed up the formula since then! I did repurchase a new, 12 oz bottle a year ago since my previous 8 oz bottle was nearly empty, but I switched cleansers around a lot last year and only finished the last bottle a couple of months ago. The photos I’ve taken are of the newer 12 oz bottle, which I got for CA$15 (reg. CA$36) during Sephora’s 2016 Boxing Day sale and no longer seems to be produced.

Currently, the sizes available are:

Size Price Price / oz
3 oz (Mini) US$11 / CA$15 US$3.67 (CA$5) / oz
8 oz (Standard) US$24 / CA$32 US$3.00 (CA$4) / oz
16 oz US$36 / CA$48 US$2.25 (CA$3) / oz
24 oz US$44 / CA$56 US$1.83 (CA$2.33) / oz
32 oz (with Pump) US$55 US$1.72 / oz

Inexplicably, the largest size—which is also the only one that comes with a pump dispenser—does not appear to be available in Canada:
