Over the last few months, Loblaw, a Canadian grocery and pharmacy retailing giant, has been making a lot of changes to their online luxury beauty store, beautyBOUTIQUE.
For one, they changed their website from beautyboutique.ca to keep it under their Shoppers Drug Mart umbrella at beauty.shoppersdrugmart.ca. This redirects to beauty.shoppersdrugmart.ca/beauty-boutique, which seems a little redundant to me.
Anyway, secondly, they added a regular Beauty section to the Luxury Beauty section! This means that Canadians can now purchase a wide variety (though not a full selection) of drugstore beauty products online via Shoppers. This is great news for me—I’ve been sending messages about this to Shoppers whenever they ask for suggestions—since I hate having to hit up a few different locations just to find the all products I want.
I’ve noticed that there are still some growing pains. For example, not all brands are available online (L’Occitane and quite a few perfume brands in the luxury section). The weekly sales are not always posted at the right time. The database is a bit wonky: Mid- and lower-priced brands (Calgon, J.R. Watkins, Marcelle, Pixi, Cake Beauty, all lower-end fragrances) show up in the Luxury section. There are some other oddities: Vasanti is under Luxury, but similarly-priced Nude by Nature and Consonant Skincare are slotted into regular Beauty; Strivectin is Luxury but Fekkai and Redken are filed under regular Beauty.
Another month, another Clinique Bonus! I usually have a Clinique item or two on my wishlist, and I have a few Clinique staples, as well, so it’s not hard to come up with a purchase to get a GWP—especially when it includes a cute makeup bag! This month, Clinique Canada is offering a GWP with a makeup bag designed in conjunction with Australian graphic artist Georgia Perry.
This is also an especially alluring GWP for me, since it doesn’t come with the normally ubiquitous Dramatically Different+ Moisturizing Lotion, which is just ho-hum for my skin.
A CA$31 Clinique.ca purchase gets you the GWP, and I got lucky because my latest Clinique wishlist item, Pore Refining Solutions Charcoal Mask, is exactly CA$31. Plus, Clinique.ca is also offering free shipping on all orders, for a limited time. (Psst, I also got ebates.ca cashback!)
On Saturday, Shoppers Drug Mart ran a Spend Your Points event. I skipped the last such event, so this time, with wishlist in hand, I headed out to the largest beautyBOUTIQUE by Shoppers Drug Mart near me to redeem 95,000 Optimum points for $200 worth of loot.
My wishlist went something like this:
ANNA SUI nail polish
CHANEL nail polish
GUERLAIN nail polish, particularly Black Perfecto
PAUL & JOE BEAUTÉ nail polish (are you noticing a trend, here?)
SOAP & GLORY body scrub
Basically, I wanted those fancy Météorites, a new body scrub, and, well, I always want new nail polish! I had decided to avoid getting any lip products, eyeshadow, and skincare, since I really-really-really don’t need more at the moment.
I didn’t do too badly in the end, as this is what I came home with (the location I went to didn’t have any Paul & Joe and Soap & Glory—bah!):
CHANEL Le Vernis Longwear Nail Colour in Gitane (510), $32
CHANEL Le Vernis Longwear Nail Colour in Roubachka (514), $32
GUERLAIN Météorites Light-Revealing Pearls of Powder in Medium (03), $75
GUERLAIN La Petite Robe Noire Deliciously Shiny Lip Colour in Black Perfecto (007), $37
GUERLAIN La Petite Robe Noire Deliciously Shiny Nail Colour in Black Perfecto (007), $27
SHISEIDO Facial Cotton, $11
All prices are in Canadian dollars, by the way, so don’t be shocked if you’re used to US prices! And, yes, we still have to pay sales tax (13% HST in Ontario) on the $200 redemption.
On the last day of August, since I knew I was starting a fall low-buy, I decided to splurge one last time! I knew Hudson’s Bay was running an Estée Lauder GWP, and eBates.ca (referral link) was offering an additional 5% cashback. Plus, I’d had Estée Lauder’s Pure Color Blush in Sensuous Rose on my wishlist ever since I bought it for my mom last year. Then, last week, Stashmatters praised the blush, and basically, all the stars aligned and I finally ordered it. It costs just enough to qualify for the GWP, as well!
