fivezero's Topbox, November 2017

Topbox — November 2017

Well, I’m still subscribed to Canadian subscription box Topbox (referral link)! I didn’t expect to be, but they stepped up their game a bit over the last two months, which justified the low CA$12 shipped price for me.

Here’s my November 2017 box, which I’m late in posting. I have a couple of Topbox special collection boxes to post, as well as my December 2017 box, as well.

What I Received in My Topbox (November 2017)

  • China Glaze Nail Lacquer in Dope Taupe (0.5 oz) [CA$8]
  • Elizabeth Arden Lasting Impression Mascara in Lasting Black (2.5 mL sample) [CA$32 / US$24 for 8.5 mL, value: CA$9.41]
  • Laritzy Silicone Makeup Blender [US$14]
  • Sebastian Professional Shaper Plus+ Extra Hold Hairspray (38.5 g sample) [CA$19 for 300 g, value: CA$2.44]

Also, because I submitted a mild complaint the previous month (about getting disappointing, itty bitty samples two months running), they sent me a bonus this month:

  • BeneFit Dandelion Shy Beam (4 mL sample) [CA$35 for 10 mL, value: CA$14]

Box Cost = CA$12 + 1.56 tax, free shipping

Total Box Value = CA$8 + CA$9.41 + US$14 + CA$2.44 ≈ CA$37.55

Unfortunately, I already own China Glaze Dope Taupe, but it’s still nice that they sent a polish. It’s just a shame it isn’t from a more recent collection, so I’d have been less likely to own it.

fivezero's Ipsy Glam Bag "Snow Globe" (December 2017)

Ipsy — December 2017 Glam Bag “Snow Globe”

Firstly, I want to note that I recently discovered Ipsy offers a 12-month subscription for the cost of 11 months (so US$110 for a year, rather than $120 if you pay month-to-month). Well, I’ve been paying month-to-month this whole time! So I sent an email to Ipsy support and they gladly switched me over to the discounted year-long sub. Woohoo! So, if you’re a diehard Ipsy subscriber who never considers cancelling, hit ’em up for your 1-month discount!

Onto the loot! My December Ipsy Glam Bag finally contains a makeup brush! I had actually gotten a bit annoyed with the flimsy brushes I was getting, so I downrated most of them—then for a good stretch, Ipsy failed to send me any brushes at all. Lisa Frank, SLMissGlam, and Luxie brushes came and went and never found their way into my Glam Bag.

Finally, this month, I got another Luxie brush. It’s a pretty usable eyeshadow brush, and at least now I have the opportunity to rate it better so that I’m hopefully back in the pool for brushes.

Once again, however, I didn’t get the one nail polish they had on offer (a blue shimmer from Lottie London). I wonder how many Ipsters got that polish and are bitching about receiving nail polish?!

What I Received

  • Luxie Precision Shader Onyx Brush (239) (full size; ~US$24.26)
  • MAC In Extreme Dimension 3D Black Lash (1 g sample; 13 mL for US$23)
  • NIP+FAB Dragon’s Blood Fix Plumping Serum (20 mL sample; 50 mL for US$19.95)
  • Pixi by Petra Mesmerizing Mineral Duo in Orchid Ornament (1.5 g 2-color duo; full size 5.76 g 6-color palette for US$12)
  • TonyMoly The Chok Chok Green Tea Watery Cream (10 mL sample; 60 mL for US$25)
  • Ipsy makeup bag

Glam Bag Cost

$10 + $4.99 (shipping to Canada) = US$14.99

Total Bag Value

$24.26 + $1.77 + $7.98 + $3.13 + $4.17
= US$41.31

The Luxie brush obviously provides the bulk of my bag’s value this month. It seems to be a Luxie × Ipsy edition, so I can’t find an exact MSRP, but the Onyx brushes seem to run approximately 35% more expensive than the Rose Gold line.

fivezero's Ipsy Glam Bag, All You (November 2017)

Ipsy — November 2017 Glam Bag “All You”

My November Ipsy Glam Bag (referral link) managed to arrive after the missing BLAQ Mask sample from my October Glam Bag—Ipsy were very good about re-sending the missing item, but it took a while to arrive. That’s Canada Post for you, though I am a teensy bit disappointed that Ipsy just mailed me the Mask, and nothing else to make up for the error (I’ve probably just seen too many people posting their extras, and it’s likely that Ipsy doesn’t normally do that!).

Anyway, onto this month’s bag, which I am quite happy with even thought it—gasp!—doesn’t contain a nail polish.

What I Received

  • ColourPop Ultra Satin Lip in Baracuda (3.2 oz full size; US$6)
  • Mudmasky Facial Detox Purifying Recovery Mask (15 mL sample; 60 mL for € 69)
  • Naked Cosmetics Mica Pigment in Mother Nature #06 (0.5 oz full size; US$14.99)
  • tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Feisty (1.5 g deluxe sample; 5.6 g for US$29)
  • trèStiQue Brow Pencil in Espresso (0.005 oz mini; full size contains 0.007 oz brow pencil and 2.5 mL brow gel for US$24)
  • Ipsy makeup bag

Glam Bag Cost

$10 + $4.99 (shipping to Canada) = US$14.99

Total Bag Value

$6 + € 7.25 + $14.99 + $7.77 + $8.57
= US$37.33 + € 7.25
≈ US$45.87

I’ve had higher bag values, but I do like pretty much everything in this bag! Except for the bag itself—I think this month’s bag is poorly designed. I received the teal bag, but it’s still kind of ugly to me.

fivezero's Ipsy Glam Bag "Spellbound" October 2017

Ipsy — October 2017 Glam Bag “Spellbound”

If you’re counting right, you’ll notice that my October Glam Bag only contains four products! Yes, for the first time in 29 Glam Bags, Ipsy made a mistake. I was supposed to receive a BLAQ Mask—which totally makes me think of Jet Li, and not the Batman villain—but it didn’t arrive. I contacted Ipsy and right away they told me they are sending it out ASAP.

(By the way, this month marks my 2-year Ipsy-versary, though I did have a hiatus in the middle of it—we were on a break!)

So, here’s my October Ipsy Glam Bag (referral link) with just the four items that did arrive.

Ipsy Glam Bag, October 2017, Spellbound

Ipsy October 2017 Glam Bag: “Spellbound”

Image: ipsy.com

What I Received

  • BLAQ Mask (15 mL sample; 60 mL for US$29)
  • IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores Pressed Powder (3 g sample; 9 g for US$29)
  • Pretty Woman Nail Medic Charcoal Infused Nail Polish in Volcanic Ash (10 mL full size; US$7.99)
  • tarte Lifted Sweatproof Mascara (3 mL sample; 7 mL for US$23)
  • TonyMoly Peach Hand Cream (10 mL sample; 30 mL for US$12)
  • Ipsy makeup bag

Glam Bag Cost

$10 + $4.99 (shipping to Canada) = US$14.99

Total Bag Value

$7.25 + $9.67 + $7.99 + $9.86 + $4
= US$38.77

I had a pretty low bag value this month, mostly due to the fact I only had one full-sized item in my Glam Bag! Quite a disappointment. I do like all the products I got, though, so it’s not that I’m unhappy. Yet, if I get another Pretty Woman nail polish next month while there are other cool nail brands available, I’m going to be fairly annoyed. (Seriously, I just got another Pretty Woman polish last month! I like the brand but I want to try new things.)

Revlon Mega Multiplier Mascara

Revlon — Mega Multiplier Mascara Review

I recently received Revlon’s new Mega Multiplier Mascara for review, and I was both excited and unsure what to expect, because throughout my twenty years of using mascara, I’ve somehow managed to have never tried a Revlon mascara. Ever.

It’s pretty odd, because I’m definitely a fan of some Revlon products. I can only assume it’s because Maybelline, L’Oréal, and CoverGirl take most of the drugstore mascara glory, and Revlon mascaras are never quite cheap enough for me to just toss in my shopping basket on a whim (like I’ve done with Annabelle, Essence, and Wet N Wild).

Anyway, their new mascara is actually a combination fiber and tubing mascara. I’ve used fiber mascaras in the past, but I don’t think I’ve tried a tubing one before. According to a cosmetics chemist: “Instead of the traditional oils and waxes used in mascaras, tubing formulas use a flexible polymer that is an excellent film former”, and works to thicken and lengthen eyelashes.

Revlon Mega Multiplier Mascara info card

Mega Multiplier Mascara combines fibers and tube technology in one mascara, so it’s meant to seriously lengthen and thicken the eyelashes. Perfect, because my lashes are short and thin!

fivezero's Topbox, July 2017, plus $10 Beauty Surprise

Topbox — July 2017

I recently resubscribed to Topbox (referral link), a Canadian beauty subscription that costs CA$12/month (shipping included!) for four beauty products. I had originally canceled it back in December 2015 because I felt I was getting too many of the same repeated items—Cake Beauty lotion, in particular. I chose to resubscribe last month because I’d been checking out some of the recent Topboxes and they looked pretty nice. Plus, $12 is really quite cheap considering it includes shipping.

Topbox offers a couple of different options each month. You can create a box wishlist from a list of “Privé” boxes, which typically consist of 1 or more items from a single brand (this month I recall seeing Privé options for Bobbi Brown, Dr Belmeur—there were quite a lot to choose from! I am just drawing a blank). You can wish for the Privé boxes that interest you, and depending on your luck, you might receive that box instead of the general Topbox. I’ve never personally wished for a Privé box—for whatever reason none of them has ever piqued my interest enough to forgo the regular box. I guess I just like getting a selection of brands!

Another option is the $10 Beauty Surprise, which you can add to your monthly Topbox. I believe I’ve only done it once (possibly twice?) and I remember receiving a full-size Teeez lipstick, which was awesome, except that it was red and I honestly have enough red lipstick. Nevertheless, I thought I’d do the Beauty Surprise this month—go all in!

My first Topbox, now that I’m back, is a bit of a mixed bag. On one hand, I got some great stuff that I will definitely use. The bag is well worth the $12+$10 I spent. On the other hand, I did get some repeat items!

What I Received as a $10 Beauty Surprise

  • Cake Beauty🇨🇦 Delectable Skin Perfecting Bronzing Body Lotion in Sweet Cream (100 mL full size) [value: CA$18]
  • Cake Beauty🇨🇦 Delectable Ultra Nourishing Hand Cream in Coconut & Cream (60 mL travel size) [value: CA$6]

Great, more Cake stuff! That was my first reaction, because I was already annoyed about receiving Cake lotion upon Cake lotion from both Topbox and their other subscription box, Luxe Box. I was initially also annoyed about getting a full sized bronzing lotion, since that isn’t something I normally use. But upon giving it a try on my skin, it turns out that it’s super subtle despite the way it looks in the bottle—and it smells awesome! I’ve never tried the Sweet Cream scent before, and it smells lovely and milky. So this is a reasonable win.
