As someone with short and stubbornly straight eyelashes, I’m always on the lookout for the next best waterproof mascara. For the record, my longtime favorites are CoverGirl Professional Waterproof and Maybelline Full ‘n Soft Waterproof (which is inexplicably no longer available on the Canadian market).
A year or two ago, I happened to see a waterproof mascara recommendation for lashes like mine, by a Finnish company called Lumene. I haven’t tried much in the way of Scandinavian cosmetics (just GOSH, H&M, and IsaDora, I think), and it seemed interesting enough to try out. It was available on Amazon to US addresses, so I had it mailed to family who brought it up for me.
I finally got around to trying this mascara last month—actually it looks like I waited too long, because Lumene have now revamped their lineup, and the closest product to this Blueberry Curl Waterproof Mascara is the new Blueberry Wild Curl Waterproof Mascara. The packaging kind of looks the same, so I’m hoping it’s just been renamed and is basically the same product.
The flexible plastic brush thickens and curls the lashes perfectly with no clumps
100 percent organic arctic blueberry seed oil nourishes lashes and helps to keep them strong and conditioned
The flat brush with rounded sides lifts the lashes and gives a curled and curved result
The cone shaped soft and flexible plastic bristles grip the lashes and give them color from root to tip while efficiently separating them
Here are the ingredient lists from my old version and the new version. It looks like there are only minor differences in ingredient order (and a fixed typo).
My order arrived last Thursday, which was great, as I wasn’t entirely sure whether it had to ship from the US to Canada. As it turns out, my package was shipped from Richmond Hill, ON, so tarte seems to ship Canadian orders domestically and additional duties were not incurred. Just what I need, another Canadian online store to shop from! Haha…
tarte sent a bonus code with my order, as well:
use the code REVEAL for 15% your order through May 31, 2017.
Here’s the damage (all for CA$84, though there was an additional $10 off code that I didn’t learn about until after I’d ordered, rats!). All items are full-size.
Unicorn Fabric Cosmetic Bag (MSRP CA$12)
Empowered Hybrid Gel Foundation in Light Neutral (MSRP CA$51)
Colored Clay Bronzer Blush in Peach Bronze (MSRP CA$40)
Drench Lip Splash Lipstick in Surfer Girl (MSRP CA$26)
Clay Pot Waterproof Shadow Liner (doubles as cream eyeshadow) in Rose Gold (MSRP CA$25)
Double-Ended Camouflage Brush/Tool (MSRP CA$45, on sale for $38)
So, I got a total of CA$227 ($220 if you use the brush’s sale price) worth of product for $84. Not too shabby, especially since I definitely see myself using everything!
One issue: I meant to select the lipstick in Happy, a rose shade, but somehow I ended up with Surfer Girl, a fuchsia, in my final order. I went back to the website after I noticed this and saw that the it was making shade selections even if I just moused over a swatch; I’d assumed that a click was required. Gah! Once again, I am reminded that I need to double check my orders before clicking “Submit”! In any case, Surfer Girl turns out to be quite pretty, so I’m all right with my mistake.
I don’t have a proper Throwback Thursday post for today, but I do have an Annabelle Cosmetics haul, which semi-counts as a retro thing for me!
For those who don’t know, Annabelle is a Canadian drugstore brand owned by Groupe Marcelle, based in Lacine, Québec, Canada. The same company owns:
Lise Watier (high end; acquired in 2016, making Groupe Marcelle the largest Canadian beauty company. I wonder if this is why Lise Watier haven’t been running their semi-annual clearance sales!)
CW Beggs & Sons (a men’s skincare line launched in 2015, named for the man who originally founded Marcelle in Chicago in 1874—and here I thought Marcelle had always been Canadian! It turns out Marcelle entered the Canadian market in 1949, and became a Canadian company in 1973.)
Back in the olden days (though not so far back as 1973, ha!), I owned an Annabelle powder blush (very nice) and a couple of Annabelle eyeshadow singles. Gleam was one, a shimmery vanilla, and I think there was maybe a lavender, too. They were so nice for Canadian-made drugstore products, and depotted, they would fit into MAC palettes, as well.
I should dig up the blush and shadows to show you, but for now, I present my latest Annabelle haul! It’s a two-part haul, as I bought the mascara from Shoppers Drug Mart and the eyeshadows directly from Annabelle’s official site, when they ran a great deal at Easter: 40% off all eye makeup!
All prices are in CA$.

I tracked down the Big Show Waterproof Mascara (my nearby Shopper Drug Mart locations didn’t carry the waterproof Annabelle mascaras), thanks to a glowing review from Jodi (A Brash Attitude). I also have stick straight lashes, so I’m really looking forward to trying it! I got it on sale for CA$3.99.

Also, don’t forget ebates Canada (referral link), who have 4% cash back for tarte today!
[EDIT: I didn’t get to use this, d’oh! But here’s an extra $10 off code that appears to work with this deal.]
You get to select one full-sized product from each of 7 categories (cosmetic bag, foundation, blush, lip color, eyeliner, mascara, and makeup brush) that tarte has provided. Here are the options. I have included the Canadian prices so you can see the relative values of the items in each group.

Finally, everyone in the household is on the road to recovery! I managed to stay relatively illness-free, except for once when I think I might have given myself food poisoning and had an upset stomach for a night. We were all so overwhelmed over the last week and a half that my husband actually had to remind me that we forgot about our 17th wedding anniversary over the weekend.
I should really get my computer to remind me about stuff like this.
So, we celebrated last night with some dinner delivered and half a movie (The Nice Guys, if you’re interested—and that’s how we have to roll nowadays, early to bed). Plus, we’ll add a li’l anniversary money to our fun budgets!
Speaking of fun budgets, here’s some stuff I hauled over the last couple of months from drugstores. And I’m including some stuff I got from Cosmetic Love late last year, but totally forgot about under my desk.
All prices are what I paid, not necessarily the MSRP.
