Ipsy — September 2017 Glam Bag “Like. A. Boss.”

Before I start with my September Glam Bag, I just wanted to provide an update on my missing Ipsy bag from August. When August 23 rolled around, I noticed that Landmark tracking said it was delivered on the 17th but I had never received it. I contacted Ipsy and they immediately sent out a new bag for me, which arrived by the end of the month. I was super happy with their customer service—the bag was exactly what I was supposed to get, except for an item from theBalm which they replaced with a different item from the same brand. I will have to save the extra items for a giveaway.

Well, it turns out that earlier this month, my original Ipsy bag arrived! So much for Landmark’s tracking, huh? (I’ve had an issue with them before on a Julep order—Julep were similarly wonderful and quickly sent a new package; the original has never turned up.) I’d never heard of this Landmark company until this year; suddenly I’m getting more packages from the US handled by them. They also never responded to my inquiries regarding my lost Julep package. Hrmph.

Anyway, September’s Ipsy Glam Bag (referral link) arrived in good time (well, the 19th, which is a little later than usual but I did have a points redemption item in the mix, too).

Ipsy — August 2017 Glam Bag “Good Vibes Only”

This is super late, because my first Ipsy bag for August never arrived! After a long time waiting, I finally checked my tracking number in late August and it said it had already been delivered! Which did not happen, or at least I never received it.

I thought that, technically, Ipsy could just say that the bag was delivered and so it isn’t their fault that I never received it. But I thought I’d contact them, anyway, and lo and behold—they were awesome about it. They responded to my email within a couple of hours, and my new bag was shipped the next day!

I was slightly worried that I wouldn’t be getting the same items I was supposed to be getting (I was pretty happy with my August bag), and it would be unfortunate but understandable if they didn’t have the exact items left. Yet, my bag arrived yesterday and it is exactly what I was supposed to have received, except for the eyeshadow from theBalm (they sent a same-sized sample of Bahama Mama bronzer in its place). Big kudos to Ipsy!

meme, Futurama Fry thank you email

So, here’s my August bag…

Ipsy August 2017 Glam Bag: “Good Vibes Only”

Image: ipsy.com

The Ipsy cosmetic bag came in three variations last month; I didn’t get the one I most liked (“Peace Love Lipstick”; I got “Good Vibes Only”), but it’s just a makeup bag and I’m not especially in love with August’s designs, anyway. The typography feels a bit off to me. I do like the little gold tassels, though!

Ipsy Glam Bag variations, August 2017, Good Vibes Only

What I Received

  • theBalm Bahama Mama Bronzer, Shadow & Contour Powder (0.57 g sample; 7.08 g full size US$20)
  • Juliette Has a Gun Not a Perfume (5 mL spray; 100 mL full size US$135)
  • Naked Cosmetics HD Finishing Translucent Powder (0.35 oz full size; US$23.99)
  • Pacifica Coconut Blush Duo in Beaming & Tenderheart (0.14 oz each; can’t find retail item, but Pacifica’s Blushious is 0.10 oz and retails for US$12)
  • sundays Nail Polish in No. 28 (14 mL full size; US$18)
  • Ipsy makeup bag

Glam Bag Cost

$10 + $4.99 (shipping to Canada) = US$14.99

Total Bag Value

$1.61 + $6.75 + $23.99 + $24 + $18 = US$74.35

I think the value of my August bag is over-inflated due to the Naked Cosmetics powder (which is on sale now for $14.99) and the Pacifica duo not actually being available, so I had to add the retail prices of two regular blushes. Of course, it goes the other way with theBalm’s sample being so damn tiny. The values don’t really matter that much to me, anyway—for example, I prefer the Juliette Has a Gun perfume sample to the Pacifica blush duo.

Ipsy — January 2017 Glam Bag “Metropolis”

Yay! I got another nail polish from Ipsy! OK, it’s not really a color I’d choose for myself, but it’s from a brand that’s new to me so I’m happy to try it.

I’ve also recently accumulated a lot of Ipsy points, mostly via referrals, so I have a hearty thank you to those who used my referral link to join Ipsy! I was able to redeem some of the points for a couple of things last month, so I received those with my January Glam Bag.

As a side note, I want to say that as much as I enjoy receiving my Ipsy bags, they could really do with putting up more Points Rewards on their site. Things get put up a bit haphazardly and are gone in the blink of an eye! I really hope Ipsy will improve this section of their service. While I realize the Points are a bit of a perk, they are also acquired when an Ipster helps out Ipsy by writing reviews, posting about Ipsy to social media, and referring more customers! There’s no advantage to be gained by doing all of these things if Ipsy does not make it easy to redeem Points for things we want. After all, Ipsy is doing the offering, so they should hold up their end of the bargain. Also, the points expire a year after you acquire them, so it’s important that there are options most of the time. So, if you’re thinking of joining Ipsy, this (admittedly minor) issue is something to keep in mind.

Anyway, I love my Ipsy bag this month! Here’s what I got:

What I Redeemed 500 Ipsy Points For

  • BeBella 4-Step Skincare Regimen Sample Set (250 Ipsy Points for a 4-pc set / similar 5-pc set is US$80)
  • pur~lisse Daily Lip Nourisher with Mango and Shea Butters (250 Ipsy Points for a 0.16 oz mini; 0.38 oz full size US$16)

What I Received

  • Manna Kadar 3-in-1 Blush Highlighter Eyeshadow in Fantasy (0.1 oz, not sure if it is full or sample size, packaging is slightly different from full size; full size US$19)
  • Note Fragrances Pink Peony EDP (5 mL Deluxe Mini; US$6, or 60 mL full size US$74)
  • Pacifica Blushious Coconut & Rose Infused Cheek Color in Wildrose (3 g full size but different packaging from regular product; full size US$12)
  • Pretty Woman Nail Polish in I’m Not a Ballerina (10 mL full size; USD$7.99)

Pacifica — Red Red Wine (7 Free Nail Color) Swatch & Review

Collection: Pacifica Fall 2014, 7 Free Nail Color Launch

I recently signed up for a beauty subscription box, just to try one out, and I conveniently received another Pacifica nail polish, after having just tried out their new polish line last month. Hey, it’s a red one, which is totally my cup of coffee!

Red Red Wine is a gorgeous deep red cream that stops short of being a vampy polish. It’s exactly the kind of red I love, especially now that cool weather is just around the corner.

Pacifica 7 Free Nail Color in Red Red Wine, swatch

I was surprised to see that Red Red Wine has a flat brush à la OPI’s Pro-Wide (which I don’t like because it is too big for me). It isn’t quite as large and cumbersome, though, so I am OK with it. The other Pacifica polish I tried, Abalone, doesn’t have a wide brush. Red Red Wine applied pretty nicely, with no bubbles or streaks. It is a thinner formula, however, and after two coats, you can see in the picture that it is still not fully opaque. I personally like my red creams with a luscious consistency on the nail, so I am not thrilled with this. Three coats is better, but let’s be honest, that’s kind of a pain!

The color, on the other hand, is fantastic. It’s like black cherry juice. Love! I can’t see this not working for most skintones due to the deepness of the color.

Pacifica 7 Free Nail Color, 0.45 fl. oz. / 13.3 mL. MSRP $9 US/CA (I do appreciate the price not being jacked up in Canada! Yay!). Pacifica nail polish is vegan and cruelty-free. It does not contain parabens, phthalates (dibutyl phthalate), toluene, xylene, camphor, formaldehyde, and resin.

Pacifica — Abalone (7 Free Nail Color) Swatch & Review

Collection: Pacifica Fall 2014, 7 Free Nail Color Launch

I found Pacifica cosmetics on sale recently, and was pleased to find that they have a new line of nail polish, 7 Free Nail Color. I’ve tried and liked Pacifica perfumes, body products, and candles before, so I didn’t hesitate to pick up an eyeshadow palette (which I will review later) and a nail polish.

Abalone seemed like the most unique shade, so that’s what I chose. In the bottle, it’s a medium-toned greenish Tahitian pearl-grey with a fairly strong olive green and amethyst purple iridescence. I feel like we see a lot of green and amethyst iridescent polishes, but this is the first time I think I’ve seen it in a grey base, and that is actually what makes it look very much like its namesake, the interior of an abalone shell.

Pacifica 7 Free Nail Color in Abalone, swatch

The polish itself is a little on the sheer side, which I was initially disappointed with, but on the other hand, the sheerness does lend itself well to layering over other colors, which is always cool to do with iridescent polishes. The polish built up well, and at two coats I felt like it was enough coverage. The polish did not apply perfectly evenly: even though the iridescence masks a lot of flaws, if you look carefully you can indeed see small streaky areas. Staying power is average (no base coat, Color Club top coat): I have very minor tipwear by Day 3. I don’t think I’d buy another Pacifica polish unless the color was especially unique, as the overall performance is just so-so. I do like the Abalone color very much, though!

Peanut Butter (No) Jelly Time

It’s been a long and wonderful journey outside of fivezero.ca! Now that everything has settled down with our new little peanut, and I no longer have to live off peanut butter on super-high fiber bread, I hope to get back to working full speed ahead on the database website. In the meantime, I have splurged a little on some goodies (you know, the kind that fit even when you need to lose a whole dress size!), and I’ll post pics in the coming weeks.

Here are some very recent acquisitions…

The local department store appears to be clearing out Illamasqua, which I’d never tried before save a couple of powder blushes earlier this year. I took the opportunity to try out their nail polish (of course!).

Photo: Illamasqua Powder Blushers (Beg, Tweak, Naked Rose, with Hussy and Lover, both of which I already had and love) and Nail Varnish (Alarm)

I also spotted some new-to-me Pacifica makeup online, so I picked up an eyeshadow palette and another nail polish.
