New Release: Julep — June 2018 (Plus an Update for Canadian Subscribers)

Collection: Julep 2018 June

Happy Victoria Day! I didn’t grow up in Canada, so whenever there’s a holiday and I don’t know what it’s for, I guess “Victoria Day?” and that’s what happened again last week.

Anyway, Julep’s June 2018 collection consists of five new and two repromoted shades of nail color, plus three new shades of It’s Whipped Matte Lip Mousse in Blush, Skip a Beat, and Blind Date (4.1 g for $20 / $16 Maven):

Revlon Nail Enamel in Unicornicopia, swatch

Revlon — Unicornicopia (Nail Enamel) Swatch & Review

Brand: Revlon 2017 Fall, HoloChrome

Everyone is getting in on the unicorn action, these days, and Revlon are the newest ones to release unicorn-themed cosmetics in the form of nail polish! Aww yeah.

I bought two of them at what I thought was full price, which really goes to show how cute these are, ’cause I generally despise buying stuff at full price. Revlon Nail Enamels are usually about C$9 at Rexall (I know, what?!) but I did have a $5 coupon, so I bought two holographic shades from the new HoloChrome collection.

It turns out that they must have been on sale, even as products from a new display, and they rang up at $6.79 instead. Woohoo! Fairy Dust and Unicornicopia were mine at, after the coupon, under $5 a pop!

Also, the next day, I stopped by a Shoppers Drug Mart location that I don’t often visit and saw the same display. The makeup gods must have known that I’m on a shopping spree this month, because Revlon polishes were on sale for $5.99. I picked up two more—Galactic Pink and Hologasm—and I think that’ll be it for me from this collection, as the rest are chromes, not my favorite finish.

I really want to mention that it should properly be spelled Unicornucopia,
since the word is cornucopia. But I suppose it does looks a little funny that way.

The HoloChromes collection polishes all come with a silvery holographic sticker around the cap.

Essie Gel Couture in Twill Seeker, swatch

Essie — Twill Seeker (Gel Couture) Review

Collection: Essie 2016 Spring, Gel Couture Launch: Atelier

Today I have another Essie Gel Couture color sent by one of my favorite online nail polish stores, Nail Polish Canada.

Twill Seeker (80) is from the original Spring 2016 launch, in particular the Atelier collection. It’s one of the shades that definitely caught me eye, as it’s a little different from most of the other Gel Couture shades, which tend to come in cream finishes. This one is a vampy greyed purple with veins of fine green shimmer.

Purple and green combinations are not too unusual these days, but this is a really gorgeously executed version, with an inky purple and subtle glints of green.

Essie Gel Couture in Sage You Love Me, swatch

Essie — Sage You Love Me (Gel Couture) Review

Collection: Essie 2017 Spring, Monique Lhuillier Bridal

I’ve been sitting on several shades of Essie’s Gel Couture nail polish for a while, now—they were launched last spring!—but somehow I never got around to trying them out. When one of my favorite online nail polish stores, Nail Polish Canada, contacted me about reviewing a couple of the Gel Couture colors, I was happy to oblige, and now I feel quite silly for having waited so long to try these.

I was sent the Gel Couture Top Coat (which I had actually already owned, haha!) and I chose two shades: Sage You Love Me, from Spring 2017’s Monique Lhuillier Bridal collection, and Twill Seeker, from the original Spring 2016 launch.

Today, I am reviewing Sage You Love Me (1044), which I wore all last week with the corresponding top coat. It’s a really lovely, soft and dusty sage green cream—I usually don’t go for sage greens, but this one is nicely balanced and neither too cool nor too warm. I like it a lot on my warm-toned skin, and I think it would work well on a good range of skintones.

We had quite a bit of overcast weather last week, so this muted color turned out to be a perfect choice! I also think Essie often do subtle colors amazingly well—so many of their shades seem less than unique in the bottle, but on the nail you can see that they are nuanced and well-balanced.
