Sally Hansen — Talk Is Chic (Complete Salon Manicure) Swatch & Review

Collection: Sally Hansen 2016 Complete Salon Manicure Canada Exclusives

Talk Is Chic (558), from Sally Hansen’s Complete Salon Manicure line, was released last year in a collection of fifteen Canada-exclusive shades. The whole concept is a bit odd to me! Why not release the shades for everyone?

The shade is a deep, smoky plum cream. It goes on the nail quite a bit darker than how it looks in the bottle, which was a surprise. Not vampy in the bottle, vampy on the nail!

As usual, I am not a fan of the Complete Salon Manicure stem, and this shade is no exception. My particular brush seemed ever so slightly less badly-cut than some of the others, however, so I had less trouble applying Talk Is Chic.

The formula is pretty good, and I got close to full coverage with two coats: not shabby for a vampy. A third coat might be preferred, but two are OK.

At some point, I have to try swapping out the CSM brush with a superior one, and seeing if that changes my opinion on these polishes. This line has some gorgeous colors, but it’s so let down by a poor brush, in my opinion.

Sally Hansen Color Therapy contains 0.5 US fl oz / 14.7 mL and retails for around US$7.99 / CA$9.95. The formula is free from toluene, formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, camphor, and dibutyl phthalate (DBP).

Sally Hansen’s website states that Sally Hansen and her husband developed a Hard as Nails nail treatment in the late 1950s. (This begs to differ! How odd.) Sally Hansen, the company, was purchased by Coty Inc. in 1997 when the cosmetics giant acquired Del Laboratories, which owned brands like Sally Hansen, La Cross, and NYC (New York Color). Coty itself was founded in Paris, France in 1904; today it is headquartered in New York, NY, USA. Coty is the world’s third largest cosmetics company, with brands like OPI, Rimmel, and leading fragrances (including Calvin Klein, Chloé, and Marc Jacobs) in its portfolio.

A England — Sleeping Palace (Nail Varnish) Swatch & Review

Collection: A England 2013, Burne-Jones Dream

Indie label A England‘s 2013 collection, Burne-Jones Dream, references the work of 19th century British artist Edward Burne-Jones. Much of his work is dreamily romantic, and often inspired by works of mythology and literature.

I’ve had the pleasure of seeing some of his work in person, at galleries in London and Birmingham, England—my favorite, however, was one I was lucky enough to catch on loan at Madrid’s Prado, The Last Sleep of Arthur in Avalon (1898).

As an aside, I just want to share a related story. I was lining up at the Prado—the same time I saw the Burne-Jones—and they were advertising an exhibit by another British artist, Francis Bacon, on loan from the Tate Modern. A little Spanish girl in front of me stared at the posters for a while, then tugged at her parents’ sleeves, pointed and exclaimed, “Francis Jamón!” (ham). So adorable! I didn’t have time to check out the Bacon exhibit, which also cost extra, but I’m kind of glad because I think it would probably have given me nightmares.

Another of Burne-Jones’ famous works is The Legend of Briar Rose, a series of paintings that refer to the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale. A England’s Burne-Jones Dream consists of five polishes inspired by this series: Briar Rose, Briarwood, Fated Prince, Rose Bower, and my polish today, Sleeping Palace.

Sleeping Palace is, like other holographic A England polishes I have, a subtle but stunning holographic shimmer. It’s a deep, muted eggplant purple with glints of silver and copper.

Essie Nail Polish in Sable Collar, swatch

Essie — Sable Collar (Nail Polish) Swatch & Review

Collection: Essie 2013 Winter, Shearling Darling

Sable Collar (852), is described by Essie as a “luxurious pearlescent cocoa plum”. It’s a dark, though perhaps just a touch shy of vampy, mix of plum, brown, and taupe, with some interesting shimmer. The shimmer is extremely fine and only very visible in bright light; otherwise it just gives the polish a pearl gloss finish. In bright sunlight, you can see plum, brown, taupe, and a sprinkling of cranberry shimmer. In both dim and bright light scenarios, this polish appears to have an odd overlay of grey, as if there’s a halo of dust around it. It’s an odd effect and I can’t remember the last time I saw a shade like that. I’m not in love with the effect—perhaps I just prefer my colors with more vibrancy! It’s no doubt a fascinating shade, though.

Dior Vernis in Skyline, swatch

Dior — Skyline (Vernis) Swatch & Review

Collection: Dior Fall 2016, Skyline

After falling head over heels in love with Glory last year—and it was my pedi most of this spring and summer—I resolved to get a few other Diors. When Hudson’s Bay recently offered a couple of coupons for almost 20% off beauty ($20 off $100), I thought it was a good time to finally do it, especially with the new fall collection out.

The full name of this Vernis polish is actually a mouthful: Vernis Couture Colour Gel Shine and Long Wear Nail Lacquer. Seriously! The longer and more unnecessarily complicated a product name is, the less luxurious it tends to feel to me. What’s wrong with just Vernis? Tack on the Gel Shine, if you must, for marketing purposes. At least all that verbiage is absent from the bottle itself:

Dior Vernis in Skyline

Skyline (848) is one of four neutral shades in Dior’s fall collection. It’s a deep, rum raisin chocolate in a glossy cream finish. Browns can be a little tough to pull off without looking a bit too circa 1990s, but the taupeish plum tone means it is really just the hottest vampy mauve-brown, ever.

Yves Saint Laurent La Laque Couture Nail Lacquer in Vintage Plum, swatch

Yves Saint Laurent — Vintage Plum (La Laque Couture Nail Lacquer) Swatch & Review

Collection: Yves Saint Laurent 2016 Fall, Scandal

Check it out! A nail polish swatch! And seasonally appropriate, no less. Who’d’ve thunk, on a nail polish blog? Yes, I’m finally back to swatching. Apologies for the state of my cuticles, however. The transition to fall and constant handwashing have not been kind—Sally Hansen Cuticle Remover, you’re letting me down! I have to do a better job for the next swatch.

Yves Saint Laurent Beauté recently released a fall collection called Scandal, which includes two vampy nail polishes: Fur Green (76) and Vintage Plum (77). I picked up both during a Hudson’s Bay sale, so today I have a swatch and review for Vintage Plum.

Vintage Plum (77) is exactly the kind of vampy shade I love: deep, intense, and definitely not black. This velvety plum is well-balanced, as it doesn’t pull too red or blue. I can see it going with practically anything!

OPI Nail Lacquer in Outback Aphrodisiac, swatch

Throwback Thursday! OPI — Outback Aphrodisiac (Nail Lacquer) Swatch & Review

Collection: OPI 2001 Fall, World

Today’s Throwback Thursday was released in OPI’s 12-shade World 2001 fall collection. Some of my all-time OPI favorites were released in this collection: Black Tie Optional, Mat-Adore Red, and Russian to a Party.

Outback Aphrodisiac (NL W22) is another one of these faves. It’s a sophisticated, intensely rich plum cream that’s hits a perfect balance between purple and red.
