Essie Gel Couture in Twill Seeker, swatch

Essie — Twill Seeker (Gel Couture) Review

Collection: Essie 2016 Spring, Gel Couture Launch: Atelier

Today I have another Essie Gel Couture color sent by one of my favorite online nail polish stores, Nail Polish Canada.

Twill Seeker (80) is from the original Spring 2016 launch, in particular the Atelier collection. It’s one of the shades that definitely caught me eye, as it’s a little different from most of the other Gel Couture shades, which tend to come in cream finishes. This one is a vampy greyed purple with veins of fine green shimmer.

Purple and green combinations are not too unusual these days, but this is a really gorgeously executed version, with an inky purple and subtle glints of green.

Essie — Sage You Love Me (Gel Couture) Review

Collection: Essie 2017 Spring, Monique Lhuillier Bridal

I’ve been sitting on several shades of Essie’s Gel Couture nail polish for a while, now—they were launched last spring!—but somehow I never got around to trying them out. When one of my favorite online nail polish stores, Nail Polish Canada, contacted me about reviewing a couple of the Gel Couture colors, I was happy to oblige, and now I feel quite silly for having waited so long to try these.

I was sent the Gel Couture Top Coat (which I had actually already owned, haha!) and I chose two shades: Sage You Love Me, from Spring 2017’s Monique Lhuillier Bridal collection, and Twill Seeker, from the original Spring 2016 launch.

Today, I am reviewing Sage You Love Me (1044), which I wore all last week with the corresponding top coat. It’s a really lovely, soft and dusty sage green cream—I usually don’t go for sage greens, but this one is nicely balanced and neither too cool nor too warm. I like it a lot on my warm-toned skin, and I think it would work well on a good range of skintones.

We had quite a bit of overcast weather last week, so this muted color turned out to be a perfect choice! I also think Essie often do subtle colors amazingly well—so many of their shades seem less than unique in the bottle, but on the nail you can see that they are nuanced and well-balanced.

Sothys Nail Lacquer in Rouge des Arts, swatch

Sothys — Rouge des Arts (Nail Lacquer) Review

Collection: Sothys 2017 Fall

Sothys Paris is a French beauty brand that is sold primarily in beauty institutes and spas worldwide. I had never before tried their line of skincare and cosmetics, and was intrigued when I was contacted to review a few of the nail and makeup products from their Fall 2017 collection.

I was sent a Nail Lacquer (but of course!), Cream Blush, and Rouge Mat Velvet Effect Lipsticks for review. Today, I am reviewing my favorite of all beauty products, the nail polish!

Sothys Nail Lacquer in Rouge des Arts

As befits a luxury brand, Sothys’ cosmetic packaging is elegant. The Vernis/Nail Lacquer comes in a 5 mL glass bottle, which has a pleasing heft despite its smaller size.

Sothys (pronounced so-tees) is rather romantically named for the French form (Sothys) of the Greek translation (Sothis) of the ancient Egyptian name (Sopdet) for the brightest star seen in the Earth’s night sky. In English, we know the star as Sirius. Ain’t etymology cool?

The brand’s logo is a depiction of the Egyptian personification of Sopdet as a goddess.

The sole nail color (I think) in their Fall 2017 collection is a classic red cream, Rouge des Arts (310).

Red creams are perhaps my favorite of all nail colors, and this red is especially opulent and dense, a throwback to the 1930s. It is a vibrant, deep, true red that is perfect both day and night. The pigmentation is really excellent, and to me, that’s mainly what makes this a more luxurious polish.

Review of Valcena Eau Lactée Cleansing Milk

Right off the bat, I’m just going to admit that I don’t generally like milky, lotion-y cleansers. I know it seems weird for someone with dry skin, but I have rarely ever found a milky cleanser that actually cleans properly and doesn’t end up just moving grease and makeup all over my face. Eau Lactée Cleansing Milk is slightly better than some others I’ve tried (I’ve a real doozy to trash on my blog quite soon) but it’s still really not my cup of tea.

Review of Valcena Nutri-Lift Serum

Today I will be reviewing an item they sent to me, Nutri-Lift Serum. Valcena make three different face serums: Action Jeunesse
Cream Serum, Anti-âge Cream Serum, and Nutri-Lift Serum. The first two seem to be meant for anti-aging; the Nutri-Lift is marketed specifically for dry skin. I was really pleased by this, because that’s my skin type, exactly! (Not that I couldn’t use anti-aging stuff, too, heh.)

They included some mini sizes, as well (two of which I already owned personally, and one of which they already sent in full-size, so that was a bit funny!), and a lovely note from the PR contact:

Today I will be reviewing an item they sent to me, the Multi Active Hydratante Day Cream, which is the partner to the Multi Active Régénérante Night Cream I reviewed earlier.

Valcena Multi Active Régénérative Night Cream

Valcena — Multi Active Régénérative Night Cream Review

Back in May, I bought an attractively packaged night cream at Winners that was also attractively priced at CA$12.99. I’d never heard of or seen this brand before, but it was apparently a French brand, and the product was made in Bulgaria:

Valcena Multi Active Régénérative Night Cream

I started using this cream straight away, which is a bit unusual for me as I have a habit of collecting products and not getting around to trying them for months! But the “Natural Rose Absolute” label on the package swayed me, as I am a seriously big fan of rose scents.

Valcena Multi Active Régénérative Night Cream

I had just run out of the night cream I was using at the time (Yves Rocher Anti-Age Global Complete Anti-aging Night Care) and had not yet opened up one of the others I had stockpiled, so Valcena’s rose scent moved it right to the front of the queue.
