Roberto Cavalli Paradiso eau de parfum

Happy National Fragrance Day! (2018)

Today is National Fragrance Day! I don’t know which nation this is from (probably not Canada), but I’ll celebrate it, anyway!

In honor of the day, I will round up all my Canadian drugstore perfume deals. For those who do not know, many locations of Shoppers Drug Mart and Rexall drugstores have clearance perfume shelves, where they rotate perfumes priced at CA$19.99. Occasionally, Shoppers even has weekend deals for $17.77!

These perfumes are often the cheaper drugstore lines (drugstore staples and celeb scents), but occasionally one will also find discontinued smaller sizes of designer fragrances that usually go for a lot more! It’s well worth it to swing by the clearance shelf once a week.

Here are the ones I’ve picked up over the years:

Isabella Rossellini Manifesto EDT (50 mL)
ISABELLA ROSSELLINI
Manifesto EDT (50 mL)

basil, pepper, bergamot, lily, orange blossom, musk

This is a super old one in my collection! To be honest, I haven’t used it in forever; hope it hasn’t turned. But it is quite a lovely herbal green scent.

Oscar de la Renta So de la Renta EDP (30 mL)
OSCAR DE LA RENTA
So de la Renta EDP (30 mL)

kiwi, mango, watermelon, white florals, lotus, peony, musk

This remains one of my very favorite florals. It’s light and bright, youthful yet completely classy, and supremely easy to wear. My bottle is very old, so I don’t know if the certainly reformulated version out today compares. But I do love the original.

Perfume Notes (February 2018)

Hello everybody! Happy March. I’m back, and I’ve been huffing it up, again!

The full list for February:

    1. Britney Spears Hidden Fantasy
    2. Burberry My Burberry EDP
    3. Chanel Chance Eau Fraîche
    4. Chanel Gabrielle
    5. Guerlain Samsara
    6. Guess Marciano
    7. Jean Paul Gaultier Classique EDP
    8. Mugler Les Exceptions: Oriental Express
    9. Mugler Les Exceptions: Supra Floral
    10. Narciso Rodriguez Narciso Poudrée
    11. Rihanna Rebelle
    12. Van Cleef & Arpels So First
    13. Vera Wang Princess Noir

BRITNEY SPEARS
Hidden Fantasy

Britney Spears Hidden Fantasy EDP 100 mL2008 | Rodrigo Flores-Roux
Top Notes orange, tangerine, grapefruit blossom, verbena
Heart Notes clove, Napolitano cake, lily, jasmine
Base Notes vanilla, jacaranda wood, sandalwood, amber

I already own a few of the Britney Spears Fantasy perfumes, and thought it might be nice to add another when I saw Hidden Fantasy at Rexall for C$19.99. Amazingly, they had a tester out! The first blast is cherry-vanilla root beer, with a bit of fizz. Yummy, right? But the drydown comes quickly, and it becomes a somewhat generic, vanillic powdery floral. The scent doesn’t have much longevity.

I don’t expect that much from an inexpensive celebrity scent, but I found Hidden Fantasy to be more disappointing than the others I have. I won’t be adding it to my set.Read More »

Fragrance sale shelf, Shoppers Drug Mart (December 2017)

Fragrance Sale Shelves & Revlon Street Chic Collection (December 2017, Canada)

One of the things I love best about drugstores in Canada is the fragrance sale shelf, where amazing deals can often be found—perfect for holiday giftgiving!

I’m not sure whether it was started by Shoppers Drug Mart, where there’s typically a $19.99 sale shelf, but Rexall definitely has this sale shelf now, too. They actually do two tiers of prices, at $19.99 and $29.99, though I generally still find perfumes I’m more interested in at Shoppers. Granted, I have more Shoppers locations in my repertoire.

Over the last week, I’ve hit up several of my usual locations in downtown Toronto and snapped shots of their perfume sale shelves. I think if you check out the shelves throughout the year, you’ll find better deals than they have right now, but it’s not too shabby in this holiday shopping season.

SinfulColors Nail Polish in Bite Me, swatch

SinfulColors — Bite Me (Nail Polish) Swatch & Review

Collection: SinfulColors 2017 Halloween, Night of the Living Red

I don’t always manage to pick up limited edition SinfulColors polishes,
but this fall I lucked out and found a SinfulColors Halloween display at a local Rexall—during a buy-two-get-two-free nail polish promo! (Somehow they weren’t ringing up with the discount, possibly because they were new shades, but the super cool cashier was very sweet and gave me the sale price, anyway. Thanks, chica!)

One of the shades I picked up was Bite Me (2332), which in the bottle appears to be a rich red shimmer with assorted, flat-black glitter shapes, including a sprinkling of hexagons.

SinfulColors says: “This dark brick red shade has flecks of black glitter for a speck-tacular and spooky effect.

Milani Baked Blushes in Bella Bellini & Rosa Romantica

Milani — Bella Bellini & Rosa Romantica (Baked Blush) Swatch & Review, Plus NARS Orgasm & Deep Throat

Earlier this year (or possibly late last year), Milani introduced two new shades of their highly popular Baked Blushes: Bella Bellini and Rosa Romantica.

I noticed them in a Rexall last month (Canada often gets new drugstore releases fairly late) and have been stalking the weekly sales ever since. Last week, they finally had Milani products on Buy One, Get One 50% off so they came to $6.29 each—yeah, Rexall’s sales can be pretty meh—and I had to run to a larger Rexall to snag both shades. Ideally, I’d have waited for a sale at Well.ca where Baked Blushes are a smidge cheaper, but they didn’t have the new shades at all.

But anyway, I am so happy I got them because they’re utterly gorgeous!

They have the same lovely, soft, highly-pigmented texture of all the other Baked Blushes (see my Megapost here! I think I have all of them except for Red Vino, which I can never find and may have to purchase in the US).

Bella Bellini (12) is a stunner. Milani calls it a “rose gold”, though I think it’s a lot more intense pink than rose gold usually inspires. It’s an azalea pink loaded with golden shimmer: very NARS Orgasm, except with even more shimmer.

Below, I have a swatch comparison of the following blushes:

  • Milani Baked Blush in Bella Bellini (12)
  • Milani Baked Blush in Corallina (08)
  • Milani Baked Blush in Luminoso (05)
  • NARS Blush in Deep Throat
  • NARS Blush in Orgasm

theBalm Hot Ticket Nail Polish in All You Ever Do Is Taupe, swatch

theBalm — All You Ever Do Is Taupe (Hot Ticket Nail Polish) Swatch & Review

Brand: theBalm

I actually stayed up late last night (I’ve been averaging about 5–6 hours of sleep a night, not good) swatching a polish for today, but then in my morning stupor, I accidentally deleted the pictures. Hooray for me. It was Zoya Temperance, which is awesome so I have to reswatch it for you guys soon. But anyway, this morning, I decided to do something different.

theBalm is not a brand I normally associate with nail polish—I think of blush and maybe eyeshadow. It’s also not a brand I run into very often, mostly since in Canada, the only brick-and-mortar retailer I know of is Rexall pharmacy, which until recently was not one I went to very often. (I’m a Shoppers Drug Mart girl, OK?) But in the last couple of years, Rexall have opened up bigger stores downtown that are more convenient for me to visit, so I’ve been popping in occasionally to check out the brands they carry that aren’t available at Shoppers.

Some Rexall locations carry theBalm, and last week, I finally visited a location that had a display, at Queen & University in Toronto. Luckily, this display stocked around twelve to fifteen shades of theBalm’s Hot Ticket Nail Polish and they were about half off! Or perhaps not so luckily, since it probably means they’re getting rid of them.

I picked one up last week for $4.96—they’re normally $10 (US and CA, for some reason)—then returned this week when Rexall was running a “Buy 2 Get 1 Free” sale on nail polish. So, I managed to get three more theBalm polishes for a tidy sum of $9.92!

theBalm actually produces 31 shades of polish (not quite Baskin-Robbins) and unfortunately, the Rexall I went to mostly carried tame shades of red, pink, and brown. Gah! No pretty blues, yellows or greens.

But here’s what I got, anyway:

theBalm Hot Ticket Nail Polish haulage, June 2017

  • Strawberry Fields Forevah
  • Girls Just Wanna Have Plum
  • All You Ever Do Is Taupe
  • You’re So Hot and Gold

The names are on the wordier side, aren’t they?

Foundation Swatches, & Nail Polish, at the Drugstore (March 2017)

I had some time to kill at a couple of drugstores recently, while I hunted for a new foundation, so here are more foundation swatches I did, plus some photos of new collections I spotted.

Brands covered: Cutex, Joe Fresh, L’Oréal, Pixi by Petra, Sensationail, and Vasanti.

First, the foundation swatches!

Joe Fresh – Daily Boost Fluid Foundation

CA$18

This foundation seemed a little too shiny, but the consistency was pretty nice and smooth. It’s not too thick nor too pigmented. I appear to be in-between shades Bisque and Sand. Sand looks like it’d be a nice summer foundation for me. The three shades I swatched are all quite yellow-based, no peachiness.

L’Oréal – Infallible Pro-Glow Foundation

CA$22

I really liked the texture of this foundation: not too liquidy and it blended into my dry skin nicely. The finish was very pretty and natural-looking. I’ve had luck with some other L’Oréal liquid foundations (True Match and True Match Lumi), so I think I’ll have to try this one, soon. $20 on sale is still a bit much, though. What’s going on at the drugstore?!
