Yardley, The Collection 2018 EDTs eau de toilette: Daisy Sapphire, Poppy Diamond, Rosie Ruby, Flora Jade, Lilac Amethyst, at Shoppers Drug Mart

New Release: Yardley — The Collection, Eaux de Toilette

Stalwart English brand Yardley is one of those old-timey drugstore brands that you know about but only in the way that your parents or grandparents used to keep their lavender soaps in the bathroom. I never bothered much with them until this year, when I was looking for something to add to my Shoppers Drug Mart shopping basket. I saw that Yardley’s Contemporary line of scented products were on sale, and since I’m a bit of a sucker for rose-scented anything (even the old-fashioned type! I love ’em) I popped an eau de toilette and a hand lotion into my order.

Yardley Contemporary Edition, Rose EDT

As luck would have it, they are lovely little scents at sub-CA$20 prices. The Rose lotion is an especially great deal, since it’s under CA$10 on sale, and the fragrance lasts nicely on skin!

But just last week, I happened to come upon a display in Shoppers Drug Mart for a new line of Yardley scents! In The Collection, each scent is designed for a particular “personality” and is inspired by a flower and gemstone pairing. Yardley worked with four perfumers for the five scents, including Juliette Karagueuzoglu (Coach, 21 by Costume National, Signorina by Salvatore Ferragamo) and Domitille Bertier (Flowerbomb by Viktor & Rolf, Midnight in Paris by Van Cleef & Arpels).

From Yardley:

A range of exquisite floral fragrances embodying the transformative power, beauty and allure of glittering gemstones and celebrating the opulence of British glamour. Yardley London are proud to present five new sparkling scents; Daisy Sapphire, Rosie Ruby, Poppy Diamond, Lilac Amethyst and Flora Jade.

Each with their own addictive characters, The Collection has been designed to reflect every personality. Discover which of these beautiful, explosive fragrances suits you.

Haulage! Shoppers Drug Mart / beautyBOUTIQUE (September 2018), Joe Fresh clearance

Haulage! Joe Fresh clearance at Shoppers Drug Mart (September 2018)

Over the last few months, Loblaw, a Canadian grocery and pharmacy retailing giant, has been making a lot of changes to their online luxury beauty store, beautyBOUTIQUE.

For one, they changed their website from beautyboutique.ca to keep it under their Shoppers Drug Mart umbrella at beauty.shoppersdrugmart.ca. This redirects to beauty.shoppersdrugmart.ca/beauty-boutique, which seems a little redundant to me.

Anyway, secondly, they added a regular Beauty section to the Luxury Beauty section! This means that Canadians can now purchase a wide variety (though not a full selection) of drugstore beauty products online via Shoppers. This is great news for me—I’ve been sending messages about this to Shoppers whenever they ask for suggestions—since I hate having to hit up a few different locations just to find the all products I want.

I’ve noticed that there are still some growing pains. For example, not all brands are available online (L’Occitane and quite a few perfume brands in the luxury section). The weekly sales are not always posted at the right time. The database is a bit wonky: Mid- and lower-priced brands (Calgon, J.R. Watkins, Marcelle, Pixi, Cake Beauty, all lower-end fragrances) show up in the Luxury section. There are some other oddities: Vasanti is under Luxury, but similarly-priced Nude by Nature and Consonant Skincare are slotted into regular Beauty; Strivectin is Luxury but Fekkai and Redken are filed under regular Beauty.

Happy National Fragrance Day! (2018)

Today is National Fragrance Day! I don’t know which nation this is from (probably not Canada), but I’ll celebrate it, anyway!

In honor of the day, I will round up all my Canadian drugstore perfume deals. For those who do not know, many locations of Shoppers Drug Mart and Rexall drugstores have clearance perfume shelves, where they rotate perfumes priced at CA$19.99. Occasionally, Shoppers even has weekend deals for $17.77!

These perfumes are often the cheaper drugstore lines (drugstore staples and celeb scents), but occasionally one will also find discontinued smaller sizes of designer fragrances that usually go for a lot more! It’s well worth it to swing by the clearance shelf once a week.

Here are the ones I’ve picked up over the years:

Isabella Rossellini Manifesto EDT (50 mL)
ISABELLA ROSSELLINI
Manifesto EDT (50 mL)

basil, pepper, bergamot, lily, orange blossom, musk

This is a super old one in my collection! To be honest, I haven’t used it in forever; hope it hasn’t turned. But it is quite a lovely herbal green scent.

Oscar de la Renta So de la Renta EDP (30 mL)
OSCAR DE LA RENTA
So de la Renta EDP (30 mL)

kiwi, mango, watermelon, white florals, lotus, peony, musk

This remains one of my very favorite florals. It’s light and bright, youthful yet completely classy, and supremely easy to wear. My bottle is very old, so I don’t know if the certainly reformulated version out today compares. But I do love the original.

Haulage! beautyBOUTIQUE Super Spend Your Points Event & FragranceX (January 2017)

In anticipation of the launch of PC Optimum on February 1, 2018, Shoppers Drug Mart is holding a Super Spend Your Points Event this weekend. If you’ve been saving up your Shoppers Optimum Points, now is definitely the time to redeem them!

I wish I hadn’t placed a redemption order earlier this week, but oh well. I really did not forsee them doing such a good redemption deal! The YSL Black Opium Nuit Blanche I got, which I worried about going out-of-stock, is still available, too.

Anyway, I went all out pricy perfume (and some nail polish, because it’s me), since I have decided I need to focus on finishing up a lot of makeup and skincare before acquiring any new ones. It is a brand new year, after all!

Brands like Chanel and Dior are generally the best fragrance options to redeem for, since their products are not as readily available at online discounters, or are not well-discounted even if they are. However, I found Dior Poison Girl EDT available at a better price online (and in a 30 mL size, which I prefer), so I decided against redeeming for that. Here’s what I got at Shoppers’ beautyBOUTIQUE:

What I Redeemed For

RALPH LAUREN
Woman Gift Set

30 mL EDP & 75 mL Body Lotion / $84, on sale for $67.20
(now sold out online; I did see some in-store at the SDM in Toronto Eaton Centre)
Ralph Lauren Woman Gift Set (EDP 50 mL, Body Lotion 75 mL)

This seemed to sell out immediately after I placed my order, so I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will indeed get it! [Edit: as I was writing up this post, I received an email saying my order has already shipped just a few hours after I placed it! Woohoo!]

I’m so glad I saw this set because I didn’t really need 50 mL, but that was the smallest individual bottle available online until a couple days ago. (I never get more than 30 mL unless I have to—I rotate through a lot of perfume.) This elegant, white floral scent is so gorgeous! It was love at first sniff.

CHANEL
Allure EDT

50 mL | $95
Chanel Allure EDT 50 mL

I actually wanted the EDP version of Allure, which is all cozy peaches, vanilla, and powdery florals! But the 50 mL EDP was sold out online, so I got the slightly cheaper EDT. My plan is to go in-store and test the EDT. If I like it, I’ll keep it and just get the EDP in another redemption. If I don’t like it, I should be able to exchange the unwrapped box in-store for the 50 mL EDP, and just pay the difference. It has been well over ten years since I last tested Allure EDT and I can’t remember it at all, but it is supposed to be a lighter, more citrus-y and sparkly scent than the EDP.

Sale Alert! Shoppers Drug Mart SUPER Spend Your Points Event (January 13–14, 2018)

aaaaaand of course I already redeemed 95k points this week. Guess I really should have waited. (But I just so wanted that YSL Black Opium Nuit Blanche! I was afraid it was going to sell out since it’s limited edition.)

Well, I have enough points for one more 95k redemption, so I have $210 to redeem this weekend!

Redemption works as follows:

  • 38,000 points redeem for $75 (extra $15)
  • 50,000 points redeem for $105 (extra $20)
  • 95,000 points redeem for $210 (extra $40)

Even if you don’t have enough points to redeem, it’s still worth it to do a little more shopping at SDM this month, before the switch over to PC Optimum. The Shoppers Optimum points you have at the time of the merger will be converted to PC Optimum at the ratio of 95k pts : $170 worth of PC Optimum Points. See more here.

Happy shopping, y’all! Poison Girl and Ralph Lauren Woman are already in my cart, and that almost maxes me out at $207…

And if you order online at beautyBOUTIQUE, don’t forget Ebates Canada!

Fragrance sale shelf, Shoppers Drug Mart (December 2017)

Fragrance Sale Shelves & Revlon Street Chic Collection (December 2017, Canada)

One of the things I love best about drugstores in Canada is the fragrance sale shelf, where amazing deals can often be found—perfect for holiday giftgiving!

I’m not sure whether it was started by Shoppers Drug Mart, where there’s typically a $19.99 sale shelf, but Rexall definitely has this sale shelf now, too. They actually do two tiers of prices, at $19.99 and $29.99, though I generally still find perfumes I’m more interested in at Shoppers. Granted, I have more Shoppers locations in my repertoire.

Over the last week, I’ve hit up several of my usual locations in downtown Toronto and snapped shots of their perfume sale shelves. I think if you check out the shelves throughout the year, you’ll find better deals than they have right now, but it’s not too shabby in this holiday shopping season.
