fivezero's Ipsy Glam Bag, All You (November 2017)

Ipsy — November 2017 Glam Bag “All You”

My November Ipsy Glam Bag (referral link) managed to arrive after the missing BLAQ Mask sample from my October Glam Bag—Ipsy were very good about re-sending the missing item, but it took a while to arrive. That’s Canada Post for you, though I am a teensy bit disappointed that Ipsy just mailed me the Mask, and nothing else to make up for the error (I’ve probably just seen too many people posting their extras, and it’s likely that Ipsy doesn’t normally do that!).

Anyway, onto this month’s bag, which I am quite happy with even thought it—gasp!—doesn’t contain a nail polish.

What I Received

  • ColourPop Ultra Satin Lip in Baracuda (3.2 oz full size; US$6)
  • Mudmasky Facial Detox Purifying Recovery Mask (15 mL sample; 60 mL for € 69)
  • Naked Cosmetics Mica Pigment in Mother Nature #06 (0.5 oz full size; US$14.99)
  • tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Feisty (1.5 g deluxe sample; 5.6 g for US$29)
  • trèStiQue Brow Pencil in Espresso (0.005 oz mini; full size contains 0.007 oz brow pencil and 2.5 mL brow gel for US$24)
  • Ipsy makeup bag

Glam Bag Cost

$10 + $4.99 (shipping to Canada) = US$14.99

Total Bag Value

$6 + € 7.25 + $14.99 + $7.77 + $8.57
= US$37.33 + € 7.25
≈ US$45.87

I’ve had higher bag values, but I do like pretty much everything in this bag! Except for the bag itself—I think this month’s bag is poorly designed. I received the teal bag, but it’s still kind of ugly to me.

fivezero's Sephora VIB Sale Haulage (November 2017)

Haulage! Sephora VIB Sale (November 2017)

As a VIB member at Sephora, the annual 20% off VIB sale was open to me on Friday, November 10, and I’ve since placed two orders, even though I was trying to limit myself to just the first. This always happens, and I blame November being my birthday month so usually I give myself a little more license to splurge.

Sephora VIB Sale, November 2017

(Look at that fine print! I never realized this but we “clients” are limited to 1 Dyson item and 5 Pat McGrath eyeshadow palettes per transaction; Canadians are also limited to 3 Fresh, Yves Saint Laurent, and Dior items per transaction.)

Of course, for the last couple of months, I’ve been anticipating this sale. I’ve been chucking things in and out of my shopping cart (it helps that I don’t bother to consider brands I can get at Shoppers Drug Mart / beautyBOUTIQUE, like Urban Decay, Dior, Estée Lauder, Smashbox, and Clarins).

Here’s the list of stuff I hauled, the freebies, and the stuff I wanted to haul but didn’t!

Once again, I bought more lipstick (granted, they were all marked down before the 20% discount) even though I need ’em like I need a hole in the head.

Stuff I Hauled

Too Faced Sweet Peach Eyeshadow Palette
Too Faced Sweet Peach Eyeshadow Palette [C$59]
I’ve loved the Too Faced Semi-Sweet Chocolate Bar Eyeshadow Palette that I got during last November’s VIB sale! It was a no-brainer to get the Sweet Peach palette this year.

Nails Inc. Sparkle Like a Unicorn Set with Nail Polish, Sheet Mask, Lipstick
Nails Inc. Sparkle Like a Unicorn Set: Illuminating Sheet Mask, Mini Nail Polishes (2 × 5 mL) in Unicorn VibesUnicorn Dot Com, Lip Trippin’ Iridescent Strobe Lipstick in Unicorn Tribe [C$21]
I already picked up the previous Sparkle Like a Unicorn set, so obviously I had to get this one, too. It comes with a lipstick and a sheet mask! I’ve never tried any non-nail polish things from Nails Inc., so this will be interesting.

fivezero's Ipsy Glam Bag "Spellbound" October 2017

Ipsy — October 2017 Glam Bag “Spellbound”

If you’re counting right, you’ll notice that my October Glam Bag only contains four products! Yes, for the first time in 29 Glam Bags, Ipsy made a mistake. I was supposed to receive a BLAQ Mask—which totally makes me think of Jet Li, and not the Batman villain—but it didn’t arrive. I contacted Ipsy and right away they told me they are sending it out ASAP.

(By the way, this month marks my 2-year Ipsy-versary, though I did have a hiatus in the middle of it—we were on a break!)

So, here’s my October Ipsy Glam Bag (referral link) with just the four items that did arrive.

Ipsy Glam Bag, October 2017, Spellbound

Ipsy October 2017 Glam Bag: “Spellbound”

Image: ipsy.com

What I Received

  • BLAQ Mask (15 mL sample; 60 mL for US$29)
  • IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores Pressed Powder (3 g sample; 9 g for US$29)
  • Pretty Woman Nail Medic Charcoal Infused Nail Polish in Volcanic Ash (10 mL full size; US$7.99)
  • tarte Lifted Sweatproof Mascara (3 mL sample; 7 mL for US$23)
  • TonyMoly Peach Hand Cream (10 mL sample; 30 mL for US$12)
  • Ipsy makeup bag

Glam Bag Cost

$10 + $4.99 (shipping to Canada) = US$14.99

Total Bag Value

$7.25 + $9.67 + $7.99 + $9.86 + $4
= US$38.77

I had a pretty low bag value this month, mostly due to the fact I only had one full-sized item in my Glam Bag! Quite a disappointment. I do like all the products I got, though, so it’s not that I’m unhappy. Yet, if I get another Pretty Woman nail polish next month while there are other cool nail brands available, I’m going to be fairly annoyed. (Seriously, I just got another Pretty Woman polish last month! I like the brand but I want to try new things.)

fivezero's Ipsy Glam Bag, July 2017, Over Easy

Ipsy — July 2017 Glam Bag “Over Easy”

My Ipsy bag arrived a bit late this month (I got it on the 19th, when I usually get it around the 15th), and now I’m also a bit late with my post!

Ipsy have done collaborations before, and this month they’ve done a really fun one with Sanrio! Yes, this month’s bag theme is called “Over Easy” because gudetama is on the Glam Bag (referral link).

Sanrio Gudetama on a plate

For those who don’t know, gudetama is a Sanrio character who is a lazy, ennui-filled egg yolk. It’s a bit random, and it’s freakin’ adorable. Holika Holika, the popular Korean beauty brand, came out with a gudetama collection a while back (I have some of it!) and I think it’s nifty to see Western brands jumping on the lazy, eggy bandwagon. It does appear that some Ipsters were not thrilled with having a “bizarre” cartoon egg on their Glam Bag, and the ensuing moanfest was dubbed “gudeDRAMA!” by a popular subscription box site. Bwah!

Anyway, eggs aside, I decided against requesting anything this month, since there was nothing that really excited me in their spoiler selection, though most things seemed nice to have.

I ended up receiving a nice selection of items that I’m more than happy to try out! I also got an item that I redeemed 750 Ipsy Points for (thanks to those who signed up via my referral link—mwah!). Also, I’ve started tracking Ipsy’s reward options, if you’ve got Ipsy points racked up and want to see what’s been on offer.

What I Redeemed Points For

  • Paula’s Choice Blush It On Contour Palette (limited edition, full size; US$36)

What I Received

  • Beau Gâchis Illuminator Brush (full size; US$9.95)
  • Caudalie Vinosource Moisturizing Sorbet (10 mL; 40 mL full size US$39/CA$48)
  • OFRA Godet Eyeshadow Refill in Gold Rush/Victory (2 g size; US$10)
  • Seraphine Botanicals Healthy Glow Rose-Gold Blush in Lychee + Gold (3 g full size US$14)
  • tarte Rainforest of the Sea Deep Dive Cleansing Gel (7.5 mL sample; 150 mL for US$25/CA$30)
  • Ipsy makeup bag

Glam Bag Cost

$10 + $4.99 (shipping to Canada) = US$14.99

Total Bag Value

$9.95 + $9.75 + $10 + $14 + $1.25 = US$44.95

That piddly little tarte cleanser sample really brought my bag’s value down this month! Bah!!! But honestly, I’d rather get a cleanser I’ll use than an insanely marked up eye cream that I won’t (£110? Really?).

fivezero's ColourPop haulage (June 2017)

Haulage! ColourPop — Pressed Powder Shadows (June 2017)

So, back in May, ColourPop ran this amazing promotion that offered all of their eyeshadows at 3/$10 (really it ended up being 3/$9.99), plus a free mini Ultra Satin Lip for every $20 spent, plus—and this was the real kicker for me—free international shipping on all orders.

You see, while ColourPop do offer free shipping to Canada on orders of $50 and up, this is still not that great for Canadians. Not ColourPop’s fault, of course! They’re awesome for even offering free shipping to Canada, at all!

The issue is that Canada charges duties on imports which value a measly CA$20 and up, which is about US$15 at the moment. By comparison, the US exempts duties for imports valued at $800 and under.

This means that for Canadians, a US$50 / CA$66.67 order will likely end up getting charged $10 for Canada Post’s handling, plus tax, which for me in Ontario would be 13%, around $8.71. Also, if customs don’t notice that ColourPop’s products are all made in the US, and therefore eligible for NAFTA, they might tack on an additional duty of around $5. That means a US$50 order just became CA$66.67 + CA$23.71 = CA$90.38 (or US$67.79). Stinks, right?

But Canadian customs officers are busy, so they don’t bother to charge on every single package that comes through (though I have heard that more packages are getting stopped due to an ongoing fentanyl problem). So, packages with values around US$20 are less likely to be stopped and charged.

I got super excited about finally being able to order from ColourPop without being charged an arm and a leg for shipping and duties—and to top it off, ColourPop was running a fab sale!—so I placed four separate orders, ranging in value from US$22 to $35. I was lucky and not one of them got hit for duties. Phew!

ColourPop’s packages always arrive in adorable-on-the-inside boxes, and the contents are securely wrapped. My kids are enjoying playing around with the colorful boxes. (Boxes are better than toys any day, right?)

Olive's stuffed animals in a ColourPop box

Peanut's Hot Wheels cars in a ColourPop box

My orders included a combination of Super Shock Shadows, Pressed Powder Shadows, and Ultra Lips in various finishes.

This post just covers the Pressed Powder Shadows. I picked up thirteen shades:

  1. Backseat (Metallic, deepened aquamarine)
  2. Ego (Metallic, rosy taupe)
  3. High Strung (Metallic, dusty rose)
  4. Locked and Loaded (Matte, pale yellow)
  5. Made to Last (Matte, neutral mauve)
  6. Pebbles (Satin, yellowy pink)
  7. Pinky Promise (Metallic, wine)
  8. Play by Play (Metallic, duochrome peach with a green gold flip)
  9. Ringer (Metallic, warm champagne)
  10. Sauvage (Metallic, duochrome peach with a hot pink flip)
  11. Sideline (Metallic, duochrome eggplant with a green flip)
  12. Take a Break (Metallic, duochrome peach with a subtle gold flip)
  13. Up and Up (Metallic, duochrome teal with a green flip)

tarte Empowered Hybrid Gel Foundation in Light Neutral

tarte — Empowered Hybrid Gel Foundation (Light Neutral) Review

Last month, I jumped on tarte’s Custom Beauty Kit deal and chose their Empowered Hybrid Gel Foundation as part of my set.

From tarte:

A poreless, full coverage gel foundation with skin-smoothing hyaluronic acid.

tarte only offered a limited number of foundation shades as part of the deal (which strikes me as very odd, as wouldn’t you want as many people as possible to be able to try out your foundation during such a sale?). Luckily, I was able to find what I thought would be a good match in Light Neutral, which is described as light with pink and yellow undertones.

I’m about an NC25–30, but there was no Light-Medium Neutral, and Medium Neutral looked too deep. Normally I would also have gone with Light Sand instead, which is light with yellow undertones, but I found myself having issues with too-yellow foundations of late, so I went with the neutral shade, instead. I can’t remember whether Light Sand was one of the sale options, either.

So, before the foundation arrived, I was worried that Light Neutral might be too light (as I often find myself in between the Light and Light-Medium shades of foundations) and too pink/peach.

tarte Empowered Hybrid Gel Foundation in Light Neutral

I swatched it when it arrived, and on the back of my hand, it did appear a bit too beige for my skintone (though happily, not too pink nor too peach):

tarte Empowered Hybrid Gel Foundation in Light Neutral, swatch

I had to remind myself, however, that my hands have gotten a bit tanner now that it’s spring/summer, and also a little more yellow-toned than my face.

Here it is spread out a little more on my hand:
