Topbox (Canada) — December 2015

Yeah, I know I’m crazy late with this one, but it’s my last Topbox since I discontinued it, and it arrived over Christmas and got lost among my other packages and things!

By the way, one of the main reasons I unsubscribed from Topbox is that it shares many products with its sister box, Luxe Box. It is pretty dumb that they do this, since why would anyone wish to subscribe to both boxes if they’re going to get so many duplicate products?

TRESemmé — Beauty-Full Volume Reverse System

TRESemmé, the international hair products company, is releasing a “Reverse” haircare system that consists of conditioning the hair before shampooing. Sounds weird, right?

I’d heard of co-washing before, but not this; and yet, it appears that this reverse method of hair cleansing and conditioning has been around for some time (see this overview at Nouveau Cheap, which I’ll reference later in this post). TRESemmé, of course, nearly talk about their system like it’s ground-breaking—it’s new and a game-changer—but to be fair to them, I hadn’t heard of it until I saw their new product line!

I recently signed up with Topbox Canada’s Glam Sense program, which occasionally sends products to participants in exchange for reviews. The TRESemmé package I received last month is the first time I’ve ever participated in Glam Sense.

Peanut interference.

As I said, I wasn’t familiar with this method of hair conditioning, so I was pretty excited to try it out!

I’ll lay out the facts about my hair now, so that we all know what we’re dealing with in this review:

Topbox (Canada) — November 2015

This month’s Topbox is a fairly average one. It contains three items that I’ll use, but would not necessarily have gone out of my way to try, and one item that I am sick of receiving from subscription boxes (yep, another hairspray) but it won’t go to waste since my mom uses it.

What I Received

Regular Topbox

Topbox Canada, November 2015

  • BeneFit Air Patrol (1.5 mL sample) [MSRP $38 for 4 mL]

Topbox Canada, October 2015

Topbox (Canada) — October 2015

I’m inching ever closer to the “unsubscribe” button, Topbox! I did get a nail polish, though I found it underwhelming. I also got yet another hair product, which I dislike receiving.

What I Received

Regular Topbox

Topbox Canada, October 2015

  • Avon ANEW Power Serum (7 mL sample) [MSRP US$40 for 30 mL]
  • (be) Delectable by Cake Beauty Ultra Nourishing Hand Cream in Coconut & Cream (60 mL, travel size) [It says MSRP $15 on the Topbox card, but Well.ca has the 113 mL size for $12, so I’m calling shenanigans. The 60 mL travel size is actually $7.]
  • Cuccio Colour Nail Lacquer (13 mL full size) [MSRP $4.21]
  • d:fi Reshapable Spray (9 mL, sample) [MSRP US$15.95 for 150 mL]

Extra

  • Avon ANEW Power Serum discount

    Nobel Prize-winning research, huh?

Cuccio Colour Nail Lacquer in Bologna Blush

Cuccio — Bologna Blush (Colour Nail Lacquer)

Collection: Cuccio, Amore

I just received this polish in my October 2015 Topbox. On one hand, it’s pretty fun to try out new brands of polish. On the other hand, this bottle is so dated-looking that it was hard to get excited over it!

Cuccio is a salon nail polish brand that’s been available at online discounter NailSupplies.us (formerly TransDesign, one of my old haunts! No affiliation). And yet, I hadn’t seen fit to ever give them a try! They’re US$3.25 a pop over at NailSupplies, if you want to check them out.

I finally do get to try them, now, but unfortunately I was sent a color that is most unflattering to a warm-toned person. It’s called Bologna Blush (6068), which is also unfortunate because all I can think of is this:

I realize I’m a total pleb, and they really wanted me to think of this:

Topbox September 2015

Topbox (Canada) — September 2015

I guess it had to happen! After a couple of months of being pretty pleased with my Topbox subscription, I’m disappointed in this month’s selections. For the first time, it seems like Topbox ignored my profile for half of the 4-item box.

What I Received

Regular Topbox

  • Ciaté Paint Pots in Speed Dial (13.5 mL full size) [MSRP CA$15]
  • Condition Culture Colorsmash Hair Shadow in Electric Beat (4.1 g full size) [MSRP US$13]
  • Nova Scotia Fisherman Rescue Balm (0.35 oz / 10.4 mL, sample) [MSRP CA$11.95 for 30 mL]
  • Curly Hair Solutions Curl Keeper Leave-In Conditioner (30 mL, sample) [MSRP US$18 for 240 mL]

Extra

  • Nova Scotia Fisherman online coupon for receiving free shipping and a sample (doesn’t say what product). The code doesn’t appear to be user-specific, so feel free to try it. It’s the first online code I’ve seen with spaces in it. Use code FREE SHIP AND SAMPLE at Nova Scotia Fisherman.

Luxe Box packaging

Luxe Box (Canada) — Fall 2015

Last month (yes, before I decided on a low-buy for the fall!), after unsubscribing from Ipsy and Birchbox, I decided to try out another subscription box with my newly released funds. I went for Luxe Box, which is a seasonal box that costs $26 per quarter, though you can get a slight discount for signing up for more boxes at a time.

I signed up with the semi-annual option: two boxes for $25 each. The annual option gives you four boxes for $24 each. (At the moment, I cannot see the semi-annual option on their website, just the quarterly and annual options.) Shipping is included, at least for the Canadian options. It appears they do ship to the US and other countries, but their website makes it a bit difficult for me to find out details.

You receive 7–8 trial-sized items in each curated Luxe Box. However, I was pleased to see that I actually received three full-sized items in my Fall box. Some time last month, they also offered their subscribers a “Beauty Surprise” for an additional $10. I took the plunge and received a lipstick as my Beauty Surprise.

Luxe Box Canada, Fall 2015, with $10 Beauty Surprise

My only complaint so far with Luxe Box is that their website is very underdeveloped. Even when logged into my account, there are no details about my box, what I have the possibility of receiving, no social aspect and no reviews. You can buy a few boxes, subscribe, see your account details, and that’s about it. There are dead links here and there, as well. I feel that they really need to work on the site, as it’s very lacking and uninspired compared with the Ipsy and Birchbox sites. It looks nice enough, but functionally, it doesn’t inspire confidence, which is part of the reason why it took me so long to actually subscribe to it. Only others’ positive reviews made me take the plunge!

As a side note, I only just discovered that earlier this year, Luxe Box merged with Topbox (which is the only other subscription service I use at the moment).

From Canadian Subscription Box Addict:

As of April 15th, 2015 Luxe Box has merged its operations with Topbox. Going forward Topbox will run both Luxe Box and Topbox business and operations. Both services will continue to operate under established names, and Luxe Box will continue to maintain its unique brand identity.

Huh. I guess I’ll see if the content of the two boxes starts overlapping!
