Tag Tuesday: Lip Lovin’

It has been eons since I did a Tag post, partly because I haven’t been tagged for anything in a while. Sniff! 😦

Anyway, I came across this tag at The Makeup Honey—the blogger, Sian, created the tag herself—and thought it’d be fun to do.

Tag Tuesday: Lip Lovin’

1. What was the first lipstick you ever owned?

CoverGirl in Honeyplum Glow! I can’t remember if my mom let me buy it, or if she gave it to me. Or maybe I just “borrowed” it and she never said anything! I used it all through high school. JUST ONE LIPSTICK. Boggles my mind, now.

2. Which lip product has been the biggest disappointment?

Lipstick Queen’s Sinner Lipstick in Berry. Horrid. I also hate all those pastel lipcolors that end up so chalky and showing every line and bit of dry skin on the lips! I’m looking at you, CoverGirl Katy Kat Matte Lipstick in Coral Cat and MAC Sheen Supreme Lipstick in Fashion City! Another two fails I remember well were Bobbi Brown Lip Color in Blackberry and Revlon ColorStay Ultimate Suede in Flashing Lights.

3. Which lipstick is your holy grail product?

Yves Saint Laurent La Laque Couture Nail Lacquer in Fur Green, swatch

Yves Saint Laurent — Fur Green (La Laque Couture Nail Lacquer) Swatch & Review

Collection: Yves Saint Laurent 2016 Fall, Scandal

Yesterday, I posted a swatch and review of Vintage Plum, one of two shades from Yves Saint Laurent Beauté’s new fall collection, Scandal. Today, I have the second polish, Fur Green.

Hudson's Bay luxury nail polish haulage, September 2016, Burberry, Chanel, Dior, YSL Yves Saint Laurent

Fur Green (76) is, like Vintage Plum, a vampy shade that is still obviously a color, in this case, a deep, blue-toned spruce green.

I have no idea what the name of this polish means, though. “Fur Green”? Some fashion thing I don’t understand, perhaps. I did find this pretty cool tidbit while searching for “fur green”, however:

Have you ever wondered why more animals do not have green fur? Because from our human perspective, having a green coat would help many animals hide from predators….
As it turns out green is a pretty tough color to make in nature, because the only truly green pigment is the one that makes plants green – the so-called chlorophyll. In fact animals that we perceive as green, like frogs, aren’t green at all. Frogs like many other green appearing animals have blue crystals underneath yellow colored cells.

Ruben Kuiper, ScienceDump

I don’t know if that’s necessarily true—if we perceive a frog as being green, well, that basically makes it green to us, doesn’t it?—but it’s an interesting thought. And, aren’t there plenty of chlorophyll-less green insects, birds, fish, and reptiles? I suppose none of those types of animals is furry. I guess there are probably a lot of animals that don’t see color the way we humans do, as well, so that might also have something to do with it. Also, being colored brown is probably better for camouflage against most landscapes. Sloths can appear to have green fur because of all the algae and moss growing on them, however… [/sciencethoughts] OK. Fur Green. IDGI, YSL. It’s not, like, Für Green, either, whatever that means in German (“For Green”?).

Yves Saint Laurent La Laque Couture Nail Lacquer in Vintage Plum, swatch

Yves Saint Laurent — Vintage Plum (La Laque Couture Nail Lacquer) Swatch & Review

Collection: Yves Saint Laurent 2016 Fall, Scandal

Check it out! A nail polish swatch! And seasonally appropriate, no less. Who’d’ve thunk, on a nail polish blog? Yes, I’m finally back to swatching. Apologies for the state of my cuticles, however. The transition to fall and constant handwashing have not been kind—Sally Hansen Cuticle Remover, you’re letting me down! I have to do a better job for the next swatch.

Yves Saint Laurent Beauté recently released a fall collection called Scandal, which includes two vampy nail polishes: Fur Green (76) and Vintage Plum (77). I picked up both during a Hudson’s Bay sale, so today I have a swatch and review for Vintage Plum.

Hudson's Bay luxury nail polish haulage, September 2016, Burberry, Chanel, Dior, YSL Yves Saint Laurent

Vintage Plum (77) is exactly the kind of vampy shade I love: deep, intense, and definitely not black. This velvety plum is well-balanced, as it doesn’t pull too red or blue. I can see it going with practically anything!

Shopping: Nostalgia for the Camera Bag

[Marc Jacobs Small Shutter Camera Bag, US$325. Image: modasens.com]

My very first handbag was a little blue camera bag, though I didn’t know what the style was called at the time—I was about 10! It was dark blue, not quite as deep as navy, and very plain, which is the way I liked most things as a child. I’m pretty sure I got it at TJ Maxx or Marshall’s.

I have no idea what happened to it (though, as faux leather, it probably didn’t hold up too well), but camera bags seem to be making a comeback, and I am toying with the idea of getting one for my birthday.

Here are a whole whack of styles I’ve come across. Do any catch your eye?

My favorites are the Gucci Soho Disco, the Longchamp 2.0,  the Rag & Bone Mini Flight Camera Bag, and the Vasic Collection Anselmo. I quite like the blue Moschino, as well, except for the massive gold logo on the side.

My Top 10 Blind (Unsniffed) Perfume Buys

A few people commented on Tuesday’s post about my penchant for buying fragrances unsniffed, so I thought I’d do a roundup of the successes and failures of this habit of mine. Now, while I do tend to buy unsniffed, I do not tend to buy unresearched, so my hit-to-miss ratio is actually pretty good.

Also, I tend not to buy unsniffed if I can sample the fragrance in person, or, failing that, obtain a sample online (Lucky Scent and The Perfumed Court were my go-tos when I was doing more sample-buying). Some perfume houses also do their own samples, and I’ve gotten some that way (Ava Luxe—or at least she used to, Czech & Speake, Grossmith, Les Parfums des Rosine).

Without further ado, here are my 10 favorite fragrances that I have ever bought unsniffed:

Badgley Mischka edp
Badgley Mischka — Badgley Mischka. This is an intense, jammy fruit blend—really gourmand and rich. It almost reaches the point where the fruit starts to seem overripe and on the verge of fermenting. I’ve smelled some similar fragrances and hated them, but this one just works for me. It’s not for everyone, but I love it on a cold winter day. The bottle is very luxe in heavy, faceted glass. I found it a few winters back at Winners.Read More »
